carrier bearing failed

well going down the road my carrier bearing failed it was a replacement from o'reilys and of corse lost the ticket looking at buying a new one from advance auto i had the driveshaft balanced the last time i replaced it (octber/novmber) any ideas on getting these thing to last longer then 6 months?

Is it the horse-shoe or teardrop type? My truck has the teardrop one and I bought it from autozone about a year and a half ago, still works fine.

Should last longer than that in a stockish truck. I replaced mine a year ago and the original one lasted 250k miles. If I went through one that fast Id look into getting a one piece shaft.

I'd look somewhere else for a replacement. The chain stores have never impressed me with there junk driveline stuff.
Even a street/stri truck should be able to use a stock driveline and components. Knew a guy in Tx running 12's with a bone stock drive shaft set.
Go to a driveline shop.
A one piece shaft won't solve anything... if the bearing is broken becouse of a truck problem, then a one piece shaft will either just be a tem crutch, ot a ticking time bomb.

i wasn't impressed by the how the part was i just went and picked one up from advance auto that seems stronger and better welded all around instead of just spot welds it is the tear drop one

That's the problem with these crappy aftermarket bearings is that they end up spinning in the case and get destroyed. You're replacing them every 6 months which is a pain in the butt!!! Sure you can go with the Spicer poly bearings that are built like a tank, but you're going to pay just as much if not more when it's all said and done, than if you just get a 1 piece.

Go ahead and get yourself a 1-piece and never worry about that damn bearing ever again. I had one in my LWB for about 5 years and LOVED it. That was after replacing the bearing on a semi-annual and yearly basis.

i dont really want ot go though the fabbing up a one piece i've looked into it once and noone will make one for this truck i've been happy with the 2 piece going to try this replacement bearing it seems strong then the last and going to go have the shaft checked again

If you had the shaft balanced its probably OK just make sure its clocked the same as when you took it apart. What I would check is to see if your trailing arm bushings are OK and that the rear yoke is directly inline with the trans output shaft. If this alighnment is off it will put a strain on the carrier bearing.
This alighnment can be adjusted with an adjustable panhard bar, thats why they are used when lowering a truck.

Go with a quality bearing like a BCA or Timken, that should help.

I replaced my carier bearing and all the universals at the same time and was glad of it.

The one autozone sold me was the Timken brand. It still looks brand new, I'd see if they have one at the autozone where you are.
