My 70 buildup
Trying to kill some time here at work so I thought I would share my current project. It started out with a 79 blazer that I have wheeled for the past year or so. It got beat up pretty good and I ended up breaking the windshield so I decided to do something that I had been wanting to do for a while. That is drop a truck cab on it. I love the 67-72 body style and miss my 69 suburban that I had a few years back. So I picked up a 70 chevy parts truck and started combining them.
Here is how they looked before I tore them apart. Here is the frame of the blazer with its new body sitting on it. I also transplanted the tilt column, hydroboost, and complete wiring harness from the blazer. I still need to convert the steering shaft to ujoints. I wanted to narrow the front part of the sheetmetal a bit. I had done this on the blazer and I liked both the look and the more that I could see around the front from sitting in the drivers sit. So I started hacking at the sheetmetal. After many hours I ended up with this. 12" was taken out of the front part of the hood. And here is one with the grill shortened and mocked up. Since I killed the radiator support I needed to do something to hold the front of the fenders and the radiator. Dont worry, this wasnt a rust free cab. It needed new rockers and cab corners. So I replaced it all with 2x3 steel. Needed a place to sit so that I could one day drive it. Thats it for now. Im hoping to have it out of the garage this weekend. Well see how that goes. So what do you think?

Re: My 70 buildup
The best part is it fits in the garage with the 38s on it.
Outside with all the 38s on. Test fitting the bedside. Still need to trim some of the rear off and the bottom.

Re: My 70 buildup
I took a total of 27" out of the bedside. 18 from in front of the rear wheel and 9 behind it. Its now 7 inches shorter then a shortbed bedside.

Re: My 70 buildup
Cool project, just what I wanted to see! Why did you take 9" from behind the rear wheels?
I'm going to find out today about an '86 blazer that I can get for $1500, comes with a strong 6.2 w/ AT.

Re: My 70 buildup
This way the body doesnt hang too far past the frame rails. Basicly less over hang if I were to come down a ledge or what not.

Re: My 70 buildup
Oh, okay thanks. I though maybe it was because the back half of the box looked weird with so much removed from the front half.
Can't wait to see more pics!

Re: My 70 buildup
Normally I would find something like this (the truck cut up) stupid. For some reason, I really like it. It looks bad ass! I won't be cutting my 67 up anytime soon, but I would definately be proud to own that! Make sure you take lots of pics when that baby hits the mud!
Are you going sans doors too?

Re: My 70 buildup
-22"
Yep no doors. The way that I have the front fenders mounted I cant run the stock hinges. Also part of the tube work on the front passes through the side of the firewall for a future tie-into a cage of some sorts.

Re: My 70 buildup
Well I put the hood on and drove it out of the garage to see what it all looked like.
The rear sits a bit lower then the front. Ill have to address that later. The hood isnt perfect, well none of the body work is but its a trail truck, so one side has a 1/2 gap. I think it has more to do with the hinges and how old they are. Now to put it all back together.

Re: My 70 buildup
That is wild. I think it looks much better than the one you showed earlier. The front end is just better with the width.
Great job.

Re: My 70 buildup
Last full day to work on the rig till BF for me. All I got done was the floor. :uh oh: Altho I dont have much left. Anyways I started out with a shelf from a work van. Cut it up a bit and made it all bolt in. Its in 2 main pieces with one smaller one in the passanger side so that I can get to the shifters. Which is a good thing since I need to revisit the shifters. The 1/4 all thread needs a beefing up. Yesterday I spent the whole day wiring the truck and getting everything working. I have tail lights, head lights, fan, line lock is hooked up but not sure its working.
Drivers side floor Passanger side floor pside agian, the piece that ramps down to the floor is the smaller removable one. Dash, still need to toss the radio back in. I never thought my erector set would come in handy to mount gauges. Now if I could find the rest of the erector set. I prob used it on something else. On a side note, My trailer doesnt like me. I hurt my shoulder trying to move it and hook it back up to my truck. Then I fell through one of the boards.
