Question Truck will not start

Hey Guys,
Went to start my truck today and nothing, absoultely nothing. No radio not turn over, power door locks don't work. I pulled out the battery and threw it on a charger and it read about 10 and after a half hour of charging it was right at 12. Threw it back in the truck and try to start and again absoultely nothing. Could it be an alternator? I don't have a battery tester to test it out.1991 XCAB 4x4 5.7L

Re: Truck is Dead

Put the battery back in and see if you can use jumper cables to get it started. If it will start then carefully remove the wire from the back of your alternator if the motor this will diconnect the alternator and stop its ability to recharge your battery. If it dies then you have a bad bettery. If the motor is still running on the battery but the lights are dim then the alternator isnt charging the battery the way it is supposed to. Usually the local parts store can test both of these for you in a few minutes.

I believe you are better off to just take the battery and have it tested. if it is old I would skip the test and replace. by disconecting a hot alternator you are risking blowing it. a battery is cheaper! and if the battery is dead because it isn't charging the truck will die shortly after you disconect the jumper cables. expecially if you turn on everything that uses power.

Re: Truck is Dead

89 crew,

You right I wasnt thinking about that, I fortunately keep a spare battery not to mention a glow plug controller for my 84 C10. Especially since the wife has a tendency to use it to jump her durango when she leaves the lights on and she uses the wrong battery and shorts out the controller.

kdailey

Did you get the battery and alt. tested, yet and is the truck running?

Fellas, we may be missing the obvious here. I'd check all the battery cable connections real closely before I started replacing batteries and stuff. Actually following the battery cables with your hands isn't too hard to do under the hood of these trucks with all the space the general gave you, and a lot of times, you'll detect places that the wire has actually corroded in to. I'd DEFINITELY do that before dropping $50+ on a new battery, and before messing with the alternator while the truck is running.

Re: Truck is Dead

Check the fusible link. It could very easily have shorted and burned through.

Re: Truck is Dead

Could indeed be the fuseable link on the positive battery cable. Also check the negative battery cable where it attaches to the engine, usually a stud on one of the intake manifold bolts.

I was driving home and just before I got there I lost all power. It wouldn't start after shutting off. I had replace the battery last year and the alt less than a month ago. I took off the ground from the batt and frame. Cleaned them up and everything was fine.
