68 custom camper?
I'm pretty new to these trucks, this may be a dumb question. How can you tell a custom camper from a "custom"? My Grandpa always said his truck was a camper truck? I never new what a custom camper was until I joined up here. I don't know what the differences are. My truck was ordered with a 327, TH400, 4.11 posi, and camper mirrors. Was there any special emblems they used on the 68 Custom Campers? My truck has Custom emblems at the top of the doors but I thought they used these on all of the trucks.

Re: 68 custom camper?
custom was an option package
custom camper was an option package If the option sheet (spid label) is still int eh glove box, it'll say custom camper. Custom camper is nothing more than HD springs (coil or leaf), HD tires HD shocks, and an anti sway bar. No engine, tranny, cooling....nothing like that was included. Regardles what your truck is or isn't... it IS a sweet looking ride. I never cared for that shade of blue, but I'll have to admit, it is growing on me. |

Re: 68 custom camper?
Maybe longhorn man can answer this. Did they make a c-10 custom camper? I assumed they were c-20 or c-30.
By the way nice truck.

Re: 68 custom camper?
What about the emblems for the '68? Did they have Custom Camper emblems or did they start putting those on in '69? Mine does have the HD coils and a front sway bar. Here's a pic of what it looks like now. I still have the original wheels and hub caps and the mirrors.

Here is a pic of a custom camper emblem off of longhorns mans site. It replaces the c-10 emblem.

Re: 68 custom camper?
Looks like a pretty nicely equipped 68 you have there.
I know the documentation says a Custom Camper 1/2 ton could be ordered but it would be very unusual. I think I have a 68 bruchure showing a 1/2 ton Custom Camper but I've never seen one pop up on this site or in person. I'm guessing you truck was equipped with most everything a Custom Camper could have but does not techincally have the Custom Camper option. Sweet Truck buy the way! Any More Pictures?

Re: 68 custom camper?
Cliff, what can you tell me about your rear bumper?
Dealer installed? Is the truck from Kansas? Don't tow too much with it, i tore mine. |

Re: 68 custom camper?
It is the original rear bumper. I don't know if it was dealer installed or not. Last spring I towed a 18' steel tube trailer 210 miles with about 3000lbs on it. The bumper held up fine. I also tow my 18' bass boat every few days with no problems. I probably wouldn't trust it to hold a 1/2 ton on a trailer.

Re: 68 custom camper?
My old GMC was from Kansas originally, and had that same bumper on it from the dealer ship... it isn't a factory deal, but a somewhat common style found in the south. I've heard it refered to as a rancher bumper, or a cowboy bumper, eitherway, I'd like to let mine fall off, but, it is better than nothing... just not by much. (refering to my bent, twisted and torn one, not your nice one)

Re: 68 custom camper?
Barepaint, that`s called a Barton`s bumper.More common farther into the west.
Clif,I don`t think LonghornMan tore his bumper towing for some gall dern reason. Finally,I had me a purdy lil`69 K/10 that was a CustomCamper/10.It had a 350/3-on-the-tree,posi,8"rims,wood floor,maroon/red interior,a/c,Upper pinstripe, and was a "Custom" trim pkg.

Re: 68 custom camper?
Actually I tore the bumper when it was on the GMC, it had an anemic wheezing 400 small block in it at the time... it may have been after it got the 350,but either way, it wasn't a torquey motor regardles of which small block it had that day. I was pulling my totalled longhorn out from the back yard. It had sat and sunk maybe a 1/2 inch tino the mud, which shouldn't be crap, the GMC didn't really lador or anything, but when i went back to disconnect the chain, the stupid bumper was ripped.
You'll never see me with anything bigger than a garden tractor sized trailer hooked to a bumper. I personally think bumpers with hitches should be outlawed. Seen too many ppl think that they can tow a house, just becouse there's a hitch on the back of there s-10 crap box, or ford power ranger. I feel there should be restrictions on towing, we've all seen the idiot with an old crappy van towing a load WAY too big, with the whole thing swaying back and forth from the exsesive weight... granted, most of us have done it ourselves, including me...but it doesn't make it any safer. There's a class 4 hitch under my longhorn, I have a trailer brake unit I've been wanting to install, but haven't gotten around to it yet, and it tows like a champ. just last week I had a 3000 pound sail boat hooked up, (not that that is real heavy) and it towed like a champ. Even with that dead weight hangin off the hitch, my dad still couldn't keep up with me when i was leaving the stoplights. (not exadurating on that either... he called me in traffic to tell me to ease off of it) Anyways, back to the subject, here's a pic of it on the GMC, If I can't find a pic of the rip, then I'll get another shot of it tomrow or something. |

Re: 68 custom camper?
Wow, that makes me wonder about pullin anything with mine now. A new hitch will be going under it before I drag anything heavy. Thanks for the info Longhorn! I'd never thought that it would rip like that just draggin a truck out of the mud w/ a SBC, maybe a crappy weld? I'll not be takin any chances though!

Re: 68 custom camper?
Looks like a bad weld there. With the drop bumper, you may be low for a frame-mount hitch.Maybe not, since factory bumpers sat down lower.
