How to swap old Alternator to this new one
This is another chapter on the serpentine swap. My old alternator doesn't fit in the bracket. Not that big of a deal because a mechanic buddy of mine gave me this one last week. I was just taking it for the pulley, I thought. Now I have to hook it up. Any advice would be appreciated. I've read the FAQ about the alt's but that didn't seem to apply to me.
Appreciate it.

This may help, because it looks like you need plug and wiring anyway:

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
I can get another plug that plugged into that alt originally when I go to the junkyard tomorrow. Is there a diagram that will help me wire it up?

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
hey Larry, I found a post about it when Mocwon did it, but still a little confused about the resistor part and what to wire up on the voltage regulator. Leaving now to go to the junkyard. I'll try to grab that plug in when I get there.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
The VR does not get wired in just dump it. The resistor needs to be wired to an ignition ON source.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
I bought a pigtail with the correct resistor wired in to it and spliced it to my harness. It was pricey at $20 but I've had no troubles with it.
The thing that confused me is the conversion write up for the most part converts you to the internally regulated alternator that was used prior to the serp. style alt you need. Then you need the pigtail I bought to use the newer alt. I just eliminated the middle man and soldered the pigtail to my harness and it worked. PM later and I'll give you my number if you wanna holler at me.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Here's my plug. The larger contact on the left is the red wire from the battery (same as original basically just goes to the post on the back of the alt, then I ran the red wire on my plug to the post). The yellow wire is the 3rd from the left w/resistor soldered in and it's connected to the brown wire in the original harness.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
lets see the other side where the wires attach to the contacts. That one wire looks like it goes tothe 'L' pin there is a contact in the plug for the 'S' pin you might have to solder one on there.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Sh**. Well looks like you might have to dig the epoxy\plastic (whatever it is)out so you can get at that other contact and solder a lead on there. I've never seen one with just one lead. the 'L' terminal is to excite the Alt and the 'S' terminal is for voltage sensing.

I might just buy this damn thing here:

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Bryan, you have the same alternator as Putter and Palf70step. Putter called the guy at madelectrical (I think his name is Mark, but don't hold me to it) and said he was very helpful.

If I remember right he said it included the resistor too. Sounds like the easiest way to go.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Well, I bought that plug that chickenwing recommended to buy from Advance. But I didn't look real close at my alternator. Igotachevyor2(brandon) came over and helped wire it up and today when i was done bolting all of the serpentine stuff up I couldn't get the plug to go in. My plug is oblong and that plug was rectangular. I'm going to go to the junkyard tomorrow and find an oblong one off of a car somewhere. I had to cut the new wire harness off, so when I get the harness from the junkyard I'll post a pic of it also so I can get a little help of what to connect where.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Okay, just got back from the junkyard and I believe I got the right plug(this time). I plugged it into the alternator and it fit perfect. Here's a pic of the plug I got. Can you guys tell me what needs to connect to what on the post above this one of my alt wires on the truck. Also which one of these do I need to hook the resistor up to.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
Hey Larry,
By that diagram on that post: Pink/Gray(2 wires on harness) go to MY orange wire on the post above Black wire goes to MY green wire on the post above(through a 75 ohm 3 watt resistor) DO I FINALLY GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
yes, but I'm lost.
I bought the plug from Advance that I posted the link for above. Thought I had it but got the wrong plug. So I've wired the VR like the the chevelle website says.

Re: How to swap old Alternator to this new one
like Larry said you ditch the voltage regulator and just wire the wires together and get rid of the white one. If you have the idiot light you need the brown wire hooked into the alt for the resistance. If you have an ammeter then you need to hook and additional resistor into the plug wiring. I'm confused about the statement Larry made about the diode in the alternator blowing without the resistor. I take it to mean if there is no resistance then it will blow the diode or does it mean that you need the resistor as well as wiring the brown wire to the alternator. May be he will clear this up for us. In the last paragraphs of the chevelle website he tells about the resistor and he explains how to wire the cs alternator into the harness. Here is a copy/paste of what he says.
(On the connector that I got, there were four wires and the body of the connector had identification letters. Here are the id letters and the color wires (don't count on the colors to be the same as what you get). "S", this was a heavy gauge, red wire. "F", this was a small gauge, brown wire. "L", this was a small gauge, brown/red wire. "P", this was a small gauge, brown/white wire. The red wire from "S" gets connected back to the output terminal of the alternator just like in the "SI" swap. The brown/red wire from "L" gets connected to what is shown in the diagram above as the blue wire. It's this wire that comes (indirectly) from the idiot light and it energizes the alternator. The wires from "F" and "P" are not used! As an additional note; AC Delco sells a "conversion" wiring loom if you are changing from a "SI" to a "CS" and it is nothing but a few short wires and two connectors. One connector plugs into the existing wiring loom connector that was plugged into the "SI". The other new connector plugs into the "CS". What's real important to note is that there are two different types. One is "non-resistor" and the other has a resistance in it. You want the "non-resistor" one if you are going to keep the idiot light. Use the "resistor" one if you are getting rid of the idiot light. Be sure to read the "notes" section of this page before jumping!!) I mainly posted this website for you to see the mounting brackets and other hardware but I hope the wiring info helps. VV
