I want your opinions
I want your thoughts on my truck. Tell me what I can change to make it better, what I should do to it, different mods I could. Anything you think about it, I want to know. Here are some pics, and my siggy is filled with basic info. Thanks for your input, I need different ideas about out what to do with this beast. Have a good one.

Re: I want your opinions
make is a 2 wheel drive SWB and slam it with 20 inch torque thrusts, paint it red and white and power it with a caddy 500.
Maybe we could just start witha good wax job. I do agree rims and tires would get rid of the old man truck look and give it some attidute. |

Re: I want your opinions
Nice old HD truck! Well, you asked for opinions, so here's mine. First, assuming you are happy with the engine, leave it alone. If all is mechanically sound (brakes, radiator, gearboxes, clutch, suspension etc), here are some things I would consider.
Power steering. And while you're under the hood, new heater hoses . Do something with that gaping hole in the floor, and finish it off with a rubber shift boot. Next, put down some padding/insulation/dynamat/whatever on the floor, and cover with a new fullsize rubber floormat. No carpet for this workhorse! Toss the saddle blanket seat cover, and have the seat upholstered if necessary. I'm guessing it is past due. If you drive it at night, replace the headlamps with a good set of E-codes from a reputable manufacturer such as Cibie (my favorite), Hella, or Bosch. That's the stuff that's most obvious to me. The rest is up to what you like. For instance, maybe a set of 16" wheels with tires the same height as your 17s. Possibly a front disc brake upgrade. Maybe a winch if you need/want it. To me, your truck represents what is so good about 67-72 GM trucks -- a pure work truck, very straight and mostly unmolested. It's a window to the past. Very nice!

Re: I want your opinions
I'd drive that thing until the wheels fell off...I'm very jealous. That is my dream truck right there. Chrome rims and wide tires would make it just like every other truck on the road now...keep it old and original-ish. Like american said, you could replace the split rim with some more up to date steel wheels, but keep that look. MAYBE go white on the rims, but I'm digging the black on that truck.
Longhorn...I hope you are kiddin, cuz if not, your mama needs to smack you upside the head

Re: I want your opinions
I pretty much agree with the other guys when they leave the look alone. Paint it, polish it, make everything nice, but I would not go with a bunch of aftermarket stuff on it if it were mine. For some reason, to me, aftermarket wheels and tires on a 3/4 ton truck makes them look less tough.

Re: I want your opinions
Honestly- just be happy you even own (and can drive!) a truck at 14, and save your money for when things break. Believe me, they will, even if everything seems okay now. It's not cool to have your old rig sitting in pieces at home and you have to pimp your parent's mini-van to school/work/wherever. I agree with the others, buff the thing out, and make it how you want it.

Re: I want your opinions
Maybe just put some better tires & wheels (get rid of the split rims) and make it reliable. If you think it is reliable, just drive it.
I would try and find the part of the floor that is missing and put in a rubber mat or carpet kit to quiet things down a bit, and maybe find a good radio...looks like it doesn't have one. That's a nice truck!!!!!

Re: I want your opinions
Keep it the way it is, only freshen it up. New paint, wheels, chrome bumpers and mirrors, good mud tires. (not specific on brand) You would be surprised as to how many of us dig a "stock looking" truck!

Re: I want your opinions
Just my thoughts...............If your gonna(wanna) hack that truck up I'd seriously consider selling it and getting something more common and preforming your mod's on that. You don't find a '68 in that condition with the spec sheet that truck has. IMO leave it be. In the end it will be worth more if you take care of it and leave it as is IMO.
Other than wheels and tire upgrade I wouldn't do much other than the paint.

I like the faded paint - make her reliable, and some wider modern aluminum wheels and tires and let her go ...
Nice machine!!!

Re: I want your opinions
Don't worry TP, I won't hack it up. Wheres my free BBC, anyhow?? Greasemonkey, your are 100% right and then some. The summer people that come visit my neighbors, they just look at our shop with a "WTF is going on there?!?!" look on their face. It's great, but I almost feel bad for them because they're from the city and don't really understand what it's like here. But anyway. So here's what I was planning to do to my truck:
285/75's on good looking 16's or 33x12.50 on 16.5 (if I find some alum. slots) New seat/seats, unsure whether I want a bench or buckets PS swap Move steering column down, away from my belly Put on a exhaust Put centerhump back in, since SO many people noticed it wasn't there Paint bumpers black, grille silver, install 73-87 stainless mirrors New paintjob/bodywork Maybe a headache rack So far thats all I can think up. If I could find a 67-68 3/4t 4x4 parts truck, I'd probably take the leaf springs and get them rearched 2-3inches higher, just to get her up in the air a little. But I don't know whether I wanna rip the springs out or not. I appreciate all the compliments and suggestions you guys are giving me. I'm having loads of fun reading this thread. BTW if you look closely, you'll notice there's no rear bumper. Wait until you see what will be the bumper! Last edited by JAKES 68GMC; 06-30-2006 at 08:55 PM. |

I do agree rims and tires would get rid of the old man truck look and give it some attidute. And I was just thinking how good it looked. I AM an old man and I like the old man look on trucks I would take that truck on my honeymoon. |
