Tags for truck

Guys, I need help. Went in to get the tags for my 71 and they ran the VIN number on my truck and said that some one in Alabama uesed my number to get tags for their truck in Feb. of this year. I call the Alabama branch and they said the same thing. They call the guy and he said that he sold the truck and that his wife must have written down the wrong number. What do you thing happen, stolen or mistake? and what should or can I do?

P.S. I live in Indiana the truck came from Alabama and I got it a year ago in Tenn. from a dealer.

In NC we have vehicle inspectors that will verify the VIN, sign off on the paperwork and voila your set. You would have to call the motor vehicle joint to find out who your local inspector is contact him and set up an appointment. Here they will actually meet you at your house if the vehicle cant legally be driven and sign it off, and do the state inspection. Or you could go through the process of getting a new VIN, dont know how to do, just know it can be done.

Re: Tags for truck

If I was that guy in Alabama, I'd plead ignorance, too.

If your vehicle has the VIN that your paperwork says and they are a match, I'd say the suspect vehicle is the one in Alabama.

Like the other poster said, get a member of law enforcement to verify your VIN and then see if it matches your paperwork.

I think (somebody correct me if I am wrong) that Alabama is one of those states that people live in who advertise that they can get titles for your vehicles. Whaddayathink the possibilities are that your vehicle has a less than stellar ownership history and your VIN was sold via a new title to someone whose truck didn't have a title?

Here in Arkansas, vehicles brought from out of state, which are to be registered in Arkansas, can't be registered/licensed until local or state law enforcement has verified that the VIN matches the title of the vehicle paperwork. If it doesn't, I don't know the next step, but I always look to see that they match before I buy, and I show the new owner that they do before they leave the house.

Re: Tags for truck

My vin number matches my title, all the paper work on my truck is good. But I can not get my plates for the truck. The law enforcement check my vin number and the paper work. The law in Alabama is that they do not give titles to vehicle older than 1975. The people in Alabama are the ones that are wrong. My hands are tied.

Re: Tags for truck

Have you contacted the dealership? They should have some type of info on the truck, they may be suspect also.

Re: Tags for truck

Yea, I'd take the vehicle to the DMV and show them the title AND vehicle and say, "you can see this is the correct vehicle & title...now I'd like to get tags."

If that doesn't work, then time to see an attorney.
