Re: valve springs...
yes you can find a fitting that will screwinto the sparkplug hole and hook compressed air into it to hold the vavles in place the do it one cylider at a time this method does not hold any warrenty

The 'rope method': Take about 20 ft of clothesline (cotton) rope and do one cylinder at a time in firing order. Take out the plug and feed the rope into the cylinder. It will take a LOT! Then rotate the engine by hand until the rope compresses up to the valves. It will keep them in place. I used a lever type compressor and voila....6 hours later....no more valve seal problems. I like the air method but if for some reason you lose air pressure, the valve drops into the cylinder. With the rope method, no such problem. Just my 2 cents.

Re: valve springs...
Just be sure to have the piston at TDC. That way if you lose all of your air pressure, the valve won't fall all the way out of the guide.
When I was wrenching for a living, I made a little widget out of two air fittings and a 1/4 turn valve. Then I could crack the valve open just far enough to keep enough air in the cylinder to hold the valve up, but too much air on a loose motor would cause it to want to turn over.
