Brake Booster Rod Removal??

I have a 68 chevy c-10 that I recently purchased a new brake booster for. I purchased a 3/4 ton 71-72 dual dia booster to increase my braking power. The trouble is that the rods are different lengths. I have seen people on the message board stating that they had to remove the rod, but I can't seem to figure out how to do this.

If anyone has done this before, I would appreciate the insight.

Thanks,

Adam

Re: Brake Booster Rod Removal??

Are you refering to the pedal rod? It hooks into the brake pedal with a slip key and bolt/nut. Impossible to reach unless you have the pedal about halfway down.

On the booster end the is a small spring clamp that also has a thrust washer. Best way to get that off is a long nosed set of pliers, bend the edge of the spring clamp away and push. Don't lose that little washer!

Sometimes I've had to loosen the steering column and drop it a little to get the rod off the brake pedal. If you're talking about the rod between the booster and m/c you have to remove the m/c and pull it out of the booster.

I was JUST given this link.

I had tried putting a disk/drum booster on a drum/drum truck, and was never able to do it. It's been a few years, and I can't remember what was up, but I know I was unable to make it work.

Re: Brake Booster Rod Removal??

I did a little bit of research on this from some previous postings. What I have found out is that I have the smaller brake booster brackets (3 1/2 long) and I believe that the 71-72 era trucks have the 5 3/4 long brackets.

Can anyone tell me if I can use the smaller brackets and change the booster side push rod? It is the rod that is connected into the brake booster. I thought I might need to get the larger brackets, but if I can switch out the booster rod, I will do that.

Has anyone upgraded to the 3/4 ton dual diaph brake booster used on 71-72 era trucks before? I am upgrading from a single diaph booster to a dual newer era booster.
