i need to hot wire my rig - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i lost the keys to my entire life over the weekend luckily i pulled the keys to my dd off the ring , but i have lost the keys to my 71 blazer anybody on here know how to hot wire one of these trucks with out ruiming the wiring? can i jump wires in the plug that goes to the back of the ignition switch? thanks for any help .......tom

get another ignition switch, reach under dash and remove wireing plug from old switch and plug it into your new switch. Now you can drive the blazer. then you need to work on removing the cylinder in the old switch still in the dash.

That is one thing that is scary about these trucks, just walk around with your own ignition switch, jump into any 67-72 truck, pull the wires and plug into your switch and drive off.....

I remember about 10 years ago where I use to live there was a TON of early 70's F150's that were stolen that way.

Also good to have more than one copy of each key.

ricks yeah i know i just hadnt gotten around to it i usually keep extra keys in my wallet but , oops. and dont you need the key to get the old ignition out ??

you need the key to get the old cylinder out, but it's worthless without the key. cut the bezel off the front and the ignition will pop out the back and then ... well buy a new switch, bezel, and maybe spacer if u can't get it off, but it should come off. that's what i did. plus i got a kit with matching door keys. after getting the switch assembly out of the dash, somehow the cylinder fell out.

to remove the bezel, i cut a slot with a cut off wheel past the lip of the bezel every 3/8ths of an inch and got needle nose pliars to bend that section up and it would snap off. after taking off about 3/4 of the edge it falls through the hole out the back

some poor man on here (i was reading) got his truck stolen.. they hot-wired the hei.... found it down the street, eveything fryed... must have sucked!!!! after ya replace that ignition... GET AN ALARM!!!

If I ever get mine running I plan on putting a master shutoff switch somewhere hidden on mine.
