Oil pressure gauge

Just started noticing oil pressure dropping almost to zero at idle and check gauges light coming on. (98 GMC 4x4, 183K miles)
If I shift to neutral and get rpm's up, gauge comes up to ~40 lbs.
No overheating, plenty of oil.....
My first thought is a faulty sending unit.
Anyone experienced this?? Sending unit? Oil pump?
Thanks.

Thanks Steve, I'll pick up a sending unit and see what happens.
Hope that's all it takes. . . . . .
