78

Under the hood in chalk in a couple of places my truck has 78 written on it. (at least I think its chalk, afraid to rub it off) Then on the back of the gauge cluster it has it again, 78. If I am not mistaken it was also under my dash pad. What is this supposed to be???

Part of the model number was usually scrawled from the factory on the firewall just below the hood on these trucks. If the firewall has never been painted you can usually see it. I've never heard of numbers at any of the other locations you mentioned.

I think Tom is right. I have seen the last three numbers of the VIN number marked in different areas, so they could have cut down to two depending on the plant. We have three 4x4's where the last three numbers of the VIN are painted onto the transfer case.

It would not surprise me if the number was not used to identify other parts or options.
