My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
I'm new to this board and thought I'd share my recently painted 1985 Extended cab. It's a 1 ton, it's extremely rare built for the rail road by GM. It's so odd in fact that when replacing the box we thought it had a short box on it but it wasn't, really GM cut 18" out of a long box for it to fit. So we had to have that fabrication done as well. But here it is!!

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Welcome to our addiction...
GM never built these, infact they were built by coach companies... these have been discussed on here a few times and multiple pictures posted.. feel free to search and you will come up with some more info.

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Hmmm that's odd b/c the GM plant in Janesville, Wisconsin claims they built 707 Extended Cabs for the railroad in 1985. I'll double check though. I saw no proof on those search results that they were built by coach companies.
In his description this guy claimed his was factory built as well... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-...QQcmdZViewItem Last edited by Rollinoutchevyz; 07-13-2006 at 05:03 PM. |

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Welcome to the board from Minnesota...nice truck you have there.
I am also under the assumption GM never built 73-87 extended cab trucks, but some coach companies did. If you can find some concrete proof, like brochures, articles, whatever...I would love to see them and add them to 73-87.com if you are interested. As of right now, I have nothing on there as far as extended cabs...except for one readers ride. http://www.73-87.com/readers_rides/hilliker.htm

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
I see them several times a year here in San Antonio. A coachbuilder (the name escapes me right now, but I have posted it here in the past) in Dallas/Fort Worth built them. I assume that I see more of them here than most because they were built just a few hours away. I was told a long time ago that they were sold through dealers, so most people thought they were factory built.
I had a chance to look at one in a local junkyard. It had a sticker in the driver's side door jamb with the name of the coach company on it. I wish I had a camera with me when I looked at it. The metalwork on the roof was poorly done, and had a lot of bondo. It appeared to be original, but could have been a very old repair. I was not impressed with the quality of the plastic interior pieces either. I would still like to have one, though. Slonaker |

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Welcome to the forum Rollinoutchevyz. As you can tell this has been a topic of discussion many times. Please don't take offense to any of our comments.
Everything we have ever been able to find indicates that all 73-87 extended cab trucks were GM "authorized" conversions. That doesn't mean we can't be proven wrong. Regardless of who built your extended cab, we like it. Show us more pics please...

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
You might want to try James Wood Chevrolet in Decatur, Texas for info. I lived there in the 80's and they sold them. They had a shop next door building them. I revised the reply I had originally said WALKER CHEVROLET

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Hey mbgmike
you know what would make my 350 pass emissions? It's got a cam with 530 lift not sure of the duration though. Is there anything I can do that'll fix the emissions thing without taking the cam out for a new one?

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Hey guys!!! Sorry I didn't write again, for some reason I thought no one else wrote when I didn't get anymore email notifications...oh well. Yeah this truck is in Davison MI 9 miles from Flint 85X3 your correct, You've seen it... We had it at the Flint Sloan car show a few weeks ago!! I'll post a few more pictures guys. This was definitely a headache of a truck after we started b/c we realized the bed was a "long box" only after we had a short box painted that GM Yellow, so we had to find a long box, cut out 18" and it took a long time...a lot of fabrication had to be done..but the guy doing it for us was great, didn't end up costing that much either. Thanks for the interest I'll be posting some more pictures.. Here's one before it was painted. In definite need of a paint job...had rust everwhere, the bed was done, all the ridges were entirely flattened. We truely saved this truck from the junk yard.

Re: My 85 Extended Cab, you heard correctly.
Here's some more pictures. The first is of the back as it looks now, and the second is the bed with the Line X spray-on bed liner....turned out very good...no flaws Line X is the best I've seen.
