is it worth it??

hi all, my uncle found an 88 chev with a v-6/5spd one owner truck in very good condition and 120,000 miles. i can get it for about 1800. the thing i am most worried about with the ever-rising gas prices is fuel efficiency. what kind of mpg should i be expecting from this set-up provided i dont do any hossing or anything like that.

i dont think thats too bad if it has a rust free body. my buddy had a 91 with a v6 and auto and he could get like 22 on the interstate. his is 2wd too. with my 92, i can get 19 on highway and its got a 213k v8

I get 17.5 average with the 4.3l and 4l60e and I drive it rough. The one time I took it easy I hit 23mpg. I would assume with the 5 speed and gentle driving you should pull over 20mpg easy.

Re: is it worth it??

I drive a 4.3/5spd C1500 and get at least 20 around town no matter how hard I drive it and have gotten almost 25 on the highway. Only thing that sucks is on steep hills it's underpowered.

Re: is it worth it??

The 4.3 should be alright with the 5 speed behind it. I got really frustrated with my 4.3/4l60e. It wanted to down-shift on the most moderate of hills, and would kick down 2 gears on a slightly steeper grade. When I shut down the cruise and controlled the speed myself, I could get 22 MPG out of it.

Re: is it worth it??

My 92 gave me a constant 19-20 around town (with AC ALWAYS running). Highway was normally 22-23. Oddly enough, when I was in Colorado Springs area, I averaged around 24-25. The 4.3, 5 speed and whatever gears I had just loved those hills and high elevation. I never drove one with a automatic, but with the 5 speed it got around pretty good.
