cracked door jams

OK, so I have some extra doors. lots actually. None of them perfect. Ain't that always the way. The best pair of the bunch have good exterior skins with no rust and no big holes from previous mirrors or body trim. BUT, they have cracks in the metal right below where the hinges bolt on. Has anyone seen this? If I weld em will it return? And while I have your attention, confirm my belief that there's no way to peel the skin off one door and apply it to another one. Thanks

Re: cracked door jams

I have seen that on a couple doors I have. I think the metal wears and cracks as the doors get opened and closed, and the body flexes.

I think you should be fine welding them up, but I have never done it.

You could pull the skin off, but that would be a hell of a job. I would rather find better doors than do that.

Re: cracked door jams

My DS door was cracked when I bought it. I had it welded back in like '97 and it was still holding when I removed the door for a repop a few months ago (started getting bad cancer along the door bottom).

Re: cracked door jams

yea, I had a passenger door that was cracked where the hinge bolted to. I was surprized to see that also.

Re: cracked door jams

I have seen it on other vehicles but so far none on these trucks. My $.02 is that you'll see it on vehicles where the hinges never got greased or they had damaged dins/bushing and folks just kept forcing them open and close and it will cause stress cracks around the door hinge mounts. That is the weaker of the two mount areas.

Between myself, my dad, gradpa, and one of my dad's brothers, we've literally had probably 20 of these trucks between us. Mine is the only one that ever had a door that cracked at the hinge. Mine cracked on the DS upper hinge right along the top edge of the hinge.

Re: cracked door jams

Mine is cracked along the DS upper door hinge too. door opens beautifully though, so i doubt it was ever forced or anything. Some fat farmer probably leveraged himself in and out over the years

Talking Re: cracked door jams

We have welded several doors with cracks at the hinges and have not had a failure, (some of the doors were welded over (10) years ago. I suspect what Palf70step pointed out on the sticking hinges causing the cracking is true.

Re: cracked door jams

I have had to weld up a few myself with no problems so far! I think I posted some pics in the end of the penicillian Crew cab build if you want to look then up.

Re: cracked door jams

I always assumed the cracking in the doors was due to people letting them swing open to the full extent, and bounce on the restraint. It seems the doors on the farm trucks are more prone to crack than the DD trucks,at least around here.

Abuse is what makes things break.
