Need some advice on a parts truck!
I just got a line on a '69 GMC Fleetside with a clean title (Two Owners!) that started as a frame-off resto and became a pain the back-side. The guy just lost interest in the project.
My question is this: How inter-changeable are the body pieces between the '69 and my '72 C-10 Deluxe Fleetside? Specifically, the doors, bed, and fenders. The rest of the '69, I'll part out. If I'm committing some form of blasphemy, please don't be too harsh. Also, I was rebuilding the driveshaft and discovered the rear upper coil spring pockets have started to crack. Any advice on replacing them? And, No, the '69 has leaf springs. Thanks, Claymore

The fenders are different but the rest should be compatible except maybe trim stuff! You can move your trailing arms to the gmc frame if you want!

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
djracer, Thanks for the input!
Why would the fenders be different? I thought the side markers were added in '68. Maybe that's just on the Chevy's?? Or is it something else?? This is the reason I come here, there's always so many people that are willing to help you out. Thanks again, Claymore

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
I think the front fenders are different in that the later models had a full piece front grille (i.e. covers edges of fenders) and therefore were tooled slightly different. Also, I think the fenders slope slightly more towards the front to match the steeper raked hoods in the early models. Correct me if I am wrong here...
The 72 doors have an interior screw hole at vent window... |

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
All the GMC fenders are shaped the same as the 68 Chevy fenders (short version anyways )

I kinda like the older style front clips anyway, so if I replace the whole thing, I can get the style I want and save a whole lot of rust repair. Right????

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
Per Krue, I stand corrected regarding the front fenders...I think the only difference is with or without side markers...
Yes, if you replace the whole thing, your options are wide open...think about the locations for front parking lights...bumper or grill; if you want side marker lights; if you want single/dual head lights...etc. In my opinion the 67,68 hood look best on 2 wheel drive, lowered trucks. Gives it a more rakish look...speeding while sitting still. Think about the current Chevy 2500HD truck with the steep vertical front to the hood and compare that to the 1500 trucks which are more raked and softened. I am speculating here but perhaps the GM designers were reading into the differences in the 67 thru 72 front clips when they were establishing design cue differences between their current low stance, mostly 2x rigs and the higher stanced 4x rigs. The redifinition in the fenders at the hood to fender transition has their similarities as well. |

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
The GMC fenders are the same as`68 Chevy fenders as Krue said.67 Chevy & GMC fenders are the same as these fenders in every way but the side markers.Just making sure you`re clear. So,if you want a`68 look up front, the GMC fenders are cool. You will need a 67/68 core support, headlight location is different from the 69-72 Chevys.

special-K:
The parts truck, according to the soon to be PO, has everything except the glass. Hopefully, the core support should not be a prob. Thanks for the input Claymore

Re: Need some advice on a parts truck!
I saw the donor truck today!!!!
It's looks pretty good. 71K original miles, leaf, manual steer, very little rust. There was some light surface rust on the body and a rust through in the bed about the size of a pencil eraser. The cross sills looked almost new! The doors looked great. The driver's side had a little play in it but other than that, good doors. The harness channel that runs across the upper section of the firewall has pretty bad rust through in it. but I'm not really interested in the cab. Comes with a 305 and a T350. Now I just gotta figure out to get all the big and little pieces home! Robert
