decoding the numbers on the frame

I am looking to find out what year my frame is. The cab vin seems to come back as a 1968 3/4 ton V8. It has a small back window. 1 more thing, can you find out the year for box and bed? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/i....gif:confused:

Look on top of the frame rail near the steering gear, and under the cab on the left side on top. Might need a mirroe to see that one. Should start out the same as the trucks VIN or end the same....cant remember.

EDIT - Just found a pic of my frame. The numbers under the cab end the same as the VIN... Year, Plant, then sequence number.

Yes, also on top of the frame, drivers side, just behind the steering gear. This one will be easier to find. Pop the hood and look, stay clean!

Can you get a photo of your VIN plate? You may have the one truck everyone says is real, but no one can provide.

Are you talking about the yellow stepper in your avatar pic? If so, is it original, at least the steel metal? Cause if so, it has 67 fenders front and rear.

to stir up the pot some more.... I thought all 3/4 tons were longbed fleetsides only? (with the exception of the 9.5' stepside and longhorns?) The truck in the pics looks to be a shorbed stepside. Correct me if I'm wrong Andy

You are right and wrong.
The 9 foot was a one ton only truck.
The 3/4 ton was avalible in both fleet or step side, most with the 8 foot box, mid year into was the 133 inch wheel base Longhorn.
Or... you could get it with no box at all.


Here is a pic of the location for the partial VIN on the frame. You pretty much won't be able to see the one under the cab.

In 67 - 72, off the factory production line.... no.
Some of the crew cab conversions used chopped down beds.

yes we are talking about the truck in the picture. I just got it about a month ago. I've been trying to decode cab, frame, motor, fenders, etc.
I wasn't sure about the cab, I thought it was a 67'. The title says 68'. I am sure the truck isn't original because the cab is registered as a 3/4 ton and its sitting on a 1/2 ton frame. I will try to get some pics of the vin tag on here. This site has been so helpful, Thanks for all the info!!!

Be sure to include the VIN tag rivits in your pic. Were you able to find the numbers on the frame rail?

I found the frame numbers. they are 7Z144133. Does that sound right? How do you get pictures on here?

That says then that the frame is a 67, and was built at the Fremont plant.

Pics - Look for a button named "Manage Attachments" under the window where you type your reply.

So, we know your cab is a 67 becouse it is a small window, a 67 frame, all 4 fenders are 67...

Now, all you need to do is figure out WHY the data plate was replaced...

I had to remove a couple layers of paint to make it readable in the pic. 1st yellow, 2nd black, then clean with red behind plate.

That VIN tag has been installed by someone other than the assembly line. *swapped VIN tag*

You can tell by the perfectly round rivit heads. They are supposed to be what's called a rose bud rivit.

Here's the VIN off my old 69 GMC, notice the rivits.

how can you tell the difference between 67' and 68' fenders?
Is it the reflectors on the front? Mine have been filled in. Drivers side is aftermarket fender.

that's right, 67 had no side markers/reflectors, 67 did.
