New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
I am new to everything cars really. I am only 19 but i had this wonderful truck fall into my lap at the age of 18 and i love it to death. It was my dads before he passed away and I got it from him. I am just wondering about your thoughts on it, and also, since i am new to it all i kinda need help on everything!
The truck is a '68 Chevy 1/2 ton longbed stepside. That is quite a mouthful but the bed is a very unique feature. I have looked on the boards and seen other '68 stepsides...but none of them with an 8" bed!!!. We didnt have much time to do the "restoration" properly and in doing so kinda messed me up later down the road. Things done to it: Chevy blue paint on the outside Blue and Black on the inside Vinyl bench seat 3 on the tree moved to the floor new GMC crate engine v8 350 new brakes new rims and tires Thats it. The only gauge that works is the Speedometer. The gas gauge shows it is FULL at .25 of the way full...and then empty at the empty mark? (odd). I want to hook the gauges up but have no clue how to go about it. I want new shocks and springs but dont want to get ripped off at a local store.(id rather buy the shocks and springs and just have someone install them. Like i said, im only 19 with a lifetime of work ahead of me. My money is limited so the 'performance' packages are up my alley just yet. But i do want it to ride nice...and it does. But i want it better. If someone can help me.I want to lower it a few inches...when it turns i hear a scrapping noise on the back left tire(would new springs and shocks prevent this) since i feel like i am in a boat everytime i turn lol..i need help hooking the gauges up or just getting a new set. Also, I would like to move the gas tank to UNDER the bed. The smell gets me to and i want to put a sound system in behind the seat. Any thought on how i can move it? That is a special truck as it came from your dad. I've always like the long stepsides. Great looking truck. Some other members will give you help on your questions I am sure.

Welcome from California, truck looks really nice, stick around for your answers... they will be coming. There are lots of threads regarding the tank relocation, someone will know where they are.

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
I would check the ground for the guages. Also the circuit boards are very brittle and it might be broke somewhere.

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
DUDE! I love that blue color. GREAT CHOICE, MAN!
Also, Even though I'll never willingly part with my '71 straightside, I love the stepsides the best. So there's only one thing I can do. I'll have to buy another truck. LOL I'm very happy your able to have your Dad's truck and that you're also very enthusiastic about it. It will never replace your Dad, of course, but it will always carry a little part of him with you. ...as long as you have that truck. All the best. |

Hey man! Welcome from South TX.
Good looking truck. Sounds like you've done alot to her, and have a lot left to do still. I suggest pick what ever you want to do to it to start with a post a seperate question on that topic. It'll be easier than trying to get all the answers to all the questions at once. |

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
ohh, the Alabama Peanut Festival! I was stationed at Ft. Rucker for awhile. I wouldn't worry about the fuel problem until you relocate the tank. Just keep a long stick with you to check the level... just kidding, we use to do that on the farm as a kid. Nic looking truck and I too love the blue paint, I plan on using it as well. good luck

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
Welcome 68StepDude,nice truck already..I agree with waiting to tackle the fuel gauge problem until a rear tank is installed. If it`s the sending unit, you`ll be using a differfent one in the rear tank.Heck, just fill it up.These trucks run forever on a tank...not.Just keep a couple gallons handy in the bed until you get the routine down.

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
That's a good looking truck! Great to hear you & your Dad worked on it, and you want to keep it!!!
My gas guage says its full at the 1/4 mark also. And the empty reads empty! I don't worry about it. It's funny when people get in and look over and say "aren't you going to get gas?" I just laugh and tell them how the guage works... Enjoy the truck, and welcome to the forum! |

Re: New to the Forums. Check out the ride.
Hey Stepside!
I too have a stepside longbed, not sure if it is a 67 or 68 (I am posting that question after this) which I am in the middle of a restoration on. Your truck looks great. Didn't see what you did with the bed of the box, but I used oak boards which always drew many compliments. A couple of layers of poly and they hold up great, when I pulled them when I was getting ready for painting, they were still perfect. Be careful if you go that route, you actually need 98" boards, I had to buy 10' boards and ended up with a handful of 22" extra pieces that my wife used for craft projects. |
