Steering grearbox leak question

Looks like I have a seal leak in my PS gearbox. Dry around the hose connections but dripping off the end of the Pittman Arm shaft. I have a new lower seal repair kit but have not attempted this yet. Any suggestions? I know I need a Pittman Arm puller. How tough is it to get the lower seal out and replace it? Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry

Re: Steering grearbox leak question

Has nobody tried this? Is everyone replacing the gear box?
Thanks,
Larry

This is one of those things that you really have to have experience in doing. Kinda like setting gears up. It's usually a lot easier to just replace the entire gearbox, because you have to take it off to replace the seal anyway, then it's suspect whether or not you've put it back together right or not.

For my money, (& time), it's worth it to me to just replace the whole thing.

HTH,

Buddy

Yes, the whole gearbox has to come apart. Then you have to make sure you center it correctly when putting it back together. And also set up the preload properly. If you don't get it right it won't work right. Not worth the effort. Now would be a good time to upgrade to a newer, quicker ratio box.

Re: Steering grearbox leak question

I plan on replacing my gearbox this weekend - any tips? Is it just an unbolt > remove > install new box > bolt up project?

Yes, a simple bolt and unbolt. If you use a newer o'ring style box, make sure you get the hoses too. Then just splice the new high pressure hose onto your old pump side at the steel with a compression fitting.

Re: Steering grearbox leak question

SB406 How did you replace that top seal without taking the whole thing apart? You are talking about the square piece on top withe the four bolts, Right?
