Intake Coolant Leak

Alright. '72, 350, Weiand aluminum intake on stock heads. Had a coolant leak through the intake bolts. Replaced the intake manifold gaskets two weeks ago with the Fel-Pro gaskets w/ the blue silicone beads around the ports. Made sure to use teflon thread sealant on all the bolts.

Drove it for two weekends, no leaks. Drove it last on Sunday (now Thursday night so it sat cold for 3-4 days). No leaks (that I noticed) all week, today the overflow bottle was almost drained. Took it out for a quick run, water was pooling on the passenger side of the intake again.

The only thing I can think of is that I maybe overtorqued the bolts. I used a torque wrench on the ones I could get to w/ the wrench (cheap ass Sears beam-type that is too tall to use on all the bolts). Looks like (maybe) most of the water is coming from the front passenger side bolts. Should I bite the bullet and try again w/ a new set of intake gaskets?

Ideas? Thanks.

Could it be the thermostat housing?

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

Nah, not from that or the heater hose on the top of the intake (from what I can tell while checking it hot and idling). Looks like its from the intake bolts. Maybe the sealant too low on the bolts? Dunno....shouldof compressed up the threads, I would have thought....maybe I'll take a picture here in awhile....

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

OK, here it is. Most of the leak came from the front bolts but I wiped it down earlier.

Like I said, no noticible leaks for 2 weeks until tonight.....

Could the intake be warped?

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

i just don't see how coolant could physicly do this, since there is no coolant on the other end of the bolt.
it is either coming from a hose or the T-stat housing, or at the very worst, it is seeping through the alluminum at the coolant passeges...IF it even has passages in it.

thats oil not coolant.. and yes that happens all the time...got high pressure / flow oil pump?..thats what they do..remove wrap with tape replace..a couple weeks do it again..i will be fixing one of mine this weekend..
those 4 bolts, 2 on each side of the carb base have holes that go into the valley..so there open on the back side ..all the others are dead holes..
don't be shy putting on the tape...next

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

Yeah, I did change my oil recently so it'll be pretty clear, but how did my overflow drain? Sorry for being such a dipsh*t here but looks like water to me....and everything I've read says to use sealant vs. tape....and I let it cure for 15+ hours before firing it up.

OK, I'll recheck the heater hose tomorrow. Hopefully that's it.

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

OK, now that I'm thinking about it (and this is a nOOb question), but the intake which was installed 2 PO's ago is blocked on the back two coolant ports (it just dead ends.....could they have installed the wrong manifold?

Re: Intake Coolant Leak

From the picture it does kind of look like oil. If it is in fact coolant, if the t stat or heater hose was leaking the fan could be blowing it back there. If it is oil, could it be coming from your breather in the valve cover. I have seen engines with alot of blowby spit oil out all over the valve cover. And yes I prefer using silicone sealant on intake bolts. Pipe sealant is made for pipe threads and teflon tape is just a pain to use. Plus if you are actually using a torque wrench tape will mess up your reading. Just be sure to use a good grade of silicone that is resistant to oil. JMHO

I'm with rage'nrat on this one. That ain't water, thats oil. Tape 'em up and screw them back down.

Regarding your coolant overflow bottle being low -
If you had the intake off you had the coolant system open. I'm guessing you didn't "burp" your engine when you buttoned it all back up. You had a slug of air in there that was eventually displaced by the coolant in your overflow.

Think back to when you did the intake. How much water didn't fit back in the system? That is how much air you had in there.
