Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

Ive just got a my summit and jegs magazine and I've found severel other brands of mufflers that are very inexpensive, other than flowmasters what has been used for that performance sound on your trucks. I would think some or others have used the other brands of mufflers...Somehow they have to get their name out....Basicly budget exhaust is what I'm doing.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

i have flowmasters. they're a real quiet muffler. still deep, and can be loud when you floor it but not annoying. when i feel like hearing the engine, i can uncap the exhaust and run open headers, other people would resort to a louder muffler.

I've had Maremont Vortex mufflers on trucks and they sounded great!. They are used at Midas muffler chains.

no other muffler for me other than the FLOWMASTER. IMHO its the best sounding muffler out there. i picked mine up used for 75$ and it was EXACTLY the sound i needed for my bb. i did have magnaflows on the truck but never really liked the sound.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

I just did the exhaust on my truck, I ended up with a magnaflow muffler with an internal x-pipe......you didn't list what engine the muffler is being hooked up to, but the magnaflow definately gave me the best sound for my I6 (split headers), nice low end rumble, I can always hear the engine rev up as I take off, but its a great sound, when I lay into it, it sounds awesome, and on the highway, its not deafening.......if you are looking for duals with an x-pipe it might be a good bet!

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

I will be using the dynomax "thrush" turbo mufflers on my 1970. They were about 20 bucks from summit. Flowmasters have become as generic as Sam's choice drinks at Wal-Mart, in my opinion. I liked them before everyone and their brother put them on every vehicle imaginable. Now I find them annoying and very, very overpriced for what you get. Walker exhaust makes dynomax products and they are very good quality for the price.

Good thread...I put the turbo mufflers from the kit in LMC and I think they are just a little too quiet, also trying to decide which muffler to go with.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

My Dodge has Magnflow, my old GMc had Flowmaster 50', the 70 has Flowmaster 40's. I think I prefer the 50's of those three. The magnaflow is a bit too quiet and the 40's are just TOO loud. Not sure what I'm going to do when ever a new exhaust comes due for the 70.

I too have the LMC turbos and agree they are too quiet and am looking for a better sound.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

Flows are way overpriced now. Though they do sound good. I had a set of Ultraflows on my car, but with a 468 pushing 550 horse, 3'" x-pipe/exhaust, anything would have sounded good. I have the fake Flows on both of my trucks, and they sound just like them, maybe a tad quieter than the real ones, for almost half the price. I remember when Flows cost $50, now they are pushing $100?? As good as they sound, I won't buy them again, inless I get a killer deal....

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

i have a heartthrob 2.5" dual set-up on my '69 with glass packs...got the kit from JC whitney. it took a lil modifying, but the whole kit only cost 125 bucks. the glasspacks have a nice deep tone at idle and really cackles when u step into it. probably a little too loud for most daily drivers though. but i've been very impressed w/ heartthrob so far. I also have them on my daily driver with the Turbo muffler which is nice and deep but rather quite. (Probably because of the dual cats) Hope this helps...sorry so longwinded

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

You can buy Flowmasters everyday on ebay for reasonable prices. Look here for an example:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...MakeTrack=true.
I've heard about Hooker Aerochambers but never actually heard them. I also like the sound of Magnaflows. When I change my exhaust I will probably stick with the Flows because they are built very well and even though everybody and their brother has them I still like the sound.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

I bought FloPros for about 25 bucks cheaper for each muffler and they sound just like Flowmasters. I myself really don't like them. I don't like the crackling sound. I would rather have a deep muffled sound like Supertrapps. I do have two sets of those but need to figure out how to keep the heat and fumes away from the cab. And no I won't go out the back withem

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

I have 40 series flowmasters behind a 283 in my 72 and love the sound. Like special-k I had turbo tubes behind a 396 in a 66 Impala with a 4 speed and they were awesome!! Nice sound at idle and cruising, but when you cracked into it...WOW. The 67 vette's used the same chambered exhaust for the sidepipes and the sound is very similar if you have heard them. I do know it makes a big difference in where the muffler is located. With the chambered pipe I have heard if they are not towards the rear of the system they will crackle more.

Re: Budget Mufflers/Pay more for Flowmasters?

Jegs has a muffler made by Force Automotive for $29.00.
It's built like a flowmaster and sounds sort like a flowmaster and a turbo at the same time. My buddy put a pair on his '56 and I REALLY like the way they sound.

On another note. There is a company called FloPro and they make some really nice stuff. You have to find a dealer in your town that carries them however. Anyway, go here and listen to what they sound like.

My personal favorite is this one....
