64 ebrake cables & tensioner etc...
anybody know of a parts interchange manual for the 60-66 years? I've heard many parts up to 1972 will work, but it'd be nice to know, before buying a part only to find out it won't work...
the 64 I bought, has the ebrake handle under the steering column, but no cabling running to it... under the body, there is a single cable running from the driver's rear drum brake, past the t-case a little bit, and is bolted into some kind of C type metal bracket, which is connected to nothing... I see a long spring around that area, that appears to have no function, as it's not keeping tension on anything... so it appears I'm missing the cable tensioner, mounting brackets? and forward cabling to the e-brake handle. --in addition to having troubles getting just the ebrake cables... I've looked around alot and only found one place that says they have e-brake cables that'll work on my truck, and they want $90 a piece for them! that seems rather ridiculous to me... so I thought I'd ask you folks if you'd had the same issue, and what did you do to fix your ebrake cable issues? also, has anyone found a place to buy a replacement wiper switch for a 64? having troubles finding one, too... Brake cables and wiper switches are available through most vendors. Go to the links section on the home page. I checked Chevy Duty and found them, and know many of the other vendors have them. The cables are dependant on the tranny and wheelbase.

Re: 64 ebrake cables & tensioner etc...
thanks for the replies Fred and Woog!
I was able to get ahold of a local parts place and they are putting together an e-brake kit for me that'll work on my 64 stepside shortbox T10... it seems there are complete kits out there for the C10 but not 4x4's... hopefully those and a few other parts come in this week... those pics will come in handy once I get the kit...gives me some idea of where things would generally be... my truck has the orig motor and trans swapped out with a 4spd manual and a chev 350 block... I've read a few posts/articles mentioning how over the years if an auto trans was put in, most of the e-brake items get dumped, which is probably what happened to my truck at some point in its life... I am glad I have the 4spd instead of a 3spd auto...though at some point I plan on swapping in either an aod or 5spd trans... but that is a long way down the road... |

Re: 64 ebrake cables & tensioner etc...
ok, finally got ebrake parts...
the front cable installed great, and fits perfectly onto the old handle, except the firewall grommet that came with the kit is square... perhaps I'm routing the cabling wrong, but the only place I saw to route the ebrake cable is the same hole my speedometer cable is running through .. so I modified a round grommet to protect both cables somewhat. the 'intermediate' cable that came with the kit is about three feet too long... they must have given me a longbox kit, instead of a shortbox kit... so I'm going to have to either use that extra length, by somehow rerouting the rear cables so as to require a longer intermediate cable.. or simply cut the intermediate cable to fit... Personally, I do not like where the ebrake cables are fully exposed, just forward of the rear axle, before they go into the frame. I know for a fact that this design of cable routing, will not survive it's first trip 4x4ing... so perhaps it's best that I reroute the rear cables now, so I don't have to continue messing with the bloody ebrakes anymore... there is one snag in all of this... when I pulled the rear drivers side wheel & brake drum off, I found a ton of greasy gunk all over the innards of the brakes & drum... I'm guessing the gunk is gear oil from the diff, somehow leaking into the brake drum... anybody ever have this, and what can you tell me about how to fix it?

Re: 64 ebrake cables & tensioner etc...
I did a little research, and found that the seal is after the berings, and thusly shouldn't be too tough to fix. I got myself some brake parts, and am currently awaiting new brake drums to come in. I'll keep the old ones around, as they weren't totally worn out, but the rest of the brake parts on that side are pure, gunky scrap...
my dad and I also made some "P" shaped brake cable holders out of some 1/8" thick steel.. I hope to use these to secure the e-brake cables into the spots I want them, so as to minimize their vulnerability when off roading... When I get around to this, I'll make sure to take some pics and post them up on bomp for all to see...
