wiper problems - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Aside from the A/C, if I can get these wipers fixed - I think this is the only mechanical piece left for my truck.

When I turn on the ignition, my wipers move just a bit and stop. Almost like a forward/backward motion. I ran a search and saw where someone suggested turning the switch to off with the ignition on to "home" the wipers. I've done this with no change.

What else could be causing this? Is my wiring on backward? On the wrong connections to the wiper motor? I'm getting ready to go out and test the switch - but my gut tells me that the switch isn't the problem. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I suspect that there is a problem with the parking mechanism in the wiper motor. Replacing the motor would be my suggestion.

I tried to jump the switch tonight with no result change. I'm going to pull the motor tomorrow and see if I can get the motor to run out of the truck.

I'm a little confused as to what EXACTLY is the problem. I had a problem where, if I left the wiper switch ON but igntion switch OFF they would struggle to try and get back to home plate. Now, is this what you mean or are they not making a full "round" across the windshield period?

Unless you actually rewired your truck, you can not plug the motor in the wrong way. The plug's kind of an L shape and can only plug in one way.

Now, as stated before, I was a bit confused about the details of your problem. However, supposing you did not rewire your electrical and everything is stock, then you have: A bad ground, a broken motor, or a bad switch... whether it be the wiper or ingition.

I just read back. You said you jumped the motor? Then it sounds liek the motor is bad. Whatever device signals that the wiper blades have returned to the cowl area has kicked the bucket, as Jim mentioned earlier.

This truck is 100% stock with regards to wiring. I feel stupid with this one, but it appears as though I've got 2 problems.

1st - I had the connecting rods on backwards. That is the left side was on the right, and vice versa. AFter I swapped them around, the motor is able to spin freely 360*.

2nd problem - This is a new one for me. After I start the motor, it won't shut off. I killed the engine for a few minutes, and then restarted it. The wiper motor wasn't on. Then I grounded the switch wires and it started, and wouldn't shut off.

If I understand all of the advice above, that would mean that this dude is grounding somewhere. right?

Jeremy,
Do you have the actual wiper arms/blades installed or just the splined nubs sticking thru the cowl?
Sometimes they need a little resistance to make them stop.
If you are just running the splined nubs, try grabbing one with a shop rag or a pair of gloves and try to hang on. Chances are, it will stop when it returns to the 'home' position.
If you have the arms installed....then I am stumped for the moment.

I've got the cowl off without the wipers installed. I'll try the extra pressure tonight. If I can get this licked, I'm on to charging my A/C!

Looks like that did it. I don't have high speed, but that's ok for now. I plan on installing a new motor and variable speed "Putter Special".
