Replacing glove box latch

I've searched threads and could not find the answer. Here's what I'm looking for: I replaced the glove box liner on my 79 Chevy, got the old latch off. Now I'm trying to re-install the latch and can't get the right combination for it to make up. It goes in about 3/4 of the way but won't tighten up to the outside knob. How does it go back together? I see the screw threads but can't get it to start. Any suggestions on this? It has no key if that helps. Thanks.
