Delayed wipers on our trucks!

I have seen postings on here that a wiper motor from a mid 80's f@rd pickup was being used to replace the gm original to obtain delay. I know some companys make add ons but i want to make it look factory with it hooked up to the late model GM switch on the tilt. Who has done this and will a Lincoln Cont. wiper motor from a mid 80's work just as well?

Tips and maybe help with wireing would be great.

If I remember this right, a ford wiper switch was used, and our orginal motor. I could be wrong.....Any how, If I knew more about what to pull a switch out of this shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Then probably have to mount the F' switch in our dash and install our knob. Any one with a delay wiper switch from a ford??

I am currently testing my switch that will work with the 67-up wiper motors. It will intall just like the factory switch and will have a delay built in just like the new GM switches have. You will be able to use any knob of your choice on this switch. I hope to have all the kinks worked out soon.

I have manual-delay wipers on my truck. I just have to figure out how long it's been since the last time they wiped and turn the switch again! Work better now that I changed the blades, too. I'm thinking about putting on some Rain-X, but the windshield has numerous cracks on the passenger side....aw, it don't matter anyway. Don't hurt the running part, none.

Sounds like a few of you are interested, that's good. I was hoping I was not wasting my time on this switch! I CAN'T STAND how irritating it is when it is just a heavy mist coming down and you have to keep reaching over there and turn the wiper on ,then off, then on , then back off over & over & over!! I wanted my truck to have the comfort of todays trucks, like ps, pb, pw, a/c, cruise, tilt, delay wipers, remote locks, etc. My wife told me I now will have to keep my 67 until my toes are turned up, since I have so much money in it now. I told her no problem, I plan on keepin' it until then! hehehe So why not have all of todays comfort in the stylin' 67-72's?

I thought we had delay wipers already, fast and slow ??? :p

If anything I would love to make the damn things go faster, man they are slow, not that this stuff matters to me since I don't drive my truck in the rain anymore. :P

I'm curious about using a headlight switch for this? Might be a bit wierd at first... Pull switch one notch out for slow, full out for high then adjust the speed with the rheostat. Most of GM's intermittant wipers used variable resistance for the adjustable speed. Ford uses frequency. So as long as the rheostat would handle the low voltage/low current draw I dont see why this couldnt be adapted over.

Basicly if this idea worked out, you would go buy a new headlight switch W/harness (availible at aftermarket auto parts) and with a simple schematic, wire in the switch in place of your old wiper switch.

Whatcha guys think? If feed back is good I'll get to work on this asap

On my 66, I used Mazda levers with a Chevy Van column, added tilt and telescope. Now I have hi-beam flash, lights and wipers on the stalks, variable intermittent wipers. I use the cruize set button to kill the tail lights for flashing trucks, and the cruize resume to activate the BU lights manually. I used a mazda wiper motor, it was real easy to fit it where the stock motor went, I use the stock bellcrank arms. Real nice, as wash squirts, wipes twice, then stops, unlike chevy. I tried to use a newer motor, but they are sett to go to a park position that is the reverse direction we want. Some Mazda's (identical to small fords) have no delay, some a set selay, some are variable, but the motor is the same. Here is a picture with the covers removed, tilted down and out.

Sounds like a workable deal on the mazda wiper,TERRYP, but i want a GM column. I wonder how hard the wiring would be to wire to a GM column.

Maybe you could use a test light and give me a idea of how to wire the motor in.

Church I am trying to do pretty much the same thing. Driveablity and a few luxurys. I almost bought a new chevy truck but I got to thinking I would much rather have a modernized old classic that no one else had.

I also will have it for ever, heck my wife asked for one of her on last week and she has a 99 GMC, a very nice truck. I quess she is begining to love these trucks as much as I do.

I am using a GM column, but if you are talking about control levers, there are some problems. You cannot get pull for flash lights becaiuse GM uses a HI-LO switch, and there are only 2 positions. You could get intermittent wipers with GM controls by remoting the mazda delay box, but no pull the lever for one wipe, which is probably the most useful feature for wipers, but you could have the wash switch just give one wipe, and use a separate switch for washer fluid. The motors in mazda's are smaller, but I had to cut away a portion of the 'tub' the chevy motor bolts to because the mazda motor is has a shorter overall shaft, but it is set for intermittent operation. The output shaft is larger than the GM, so I filed it down to match teh chevy bellcrank. here is the schematic, power goes to motor, all actions are by grounding:

If anybody wants one, my truck came with an aftermarket wiperdelay switch that bolts under the dash. It's uglier than h**l so i took it out. It looks like an old cb radio!

1.34 inches of rain in a year? we had more than that in one hour here last week and it's supposed to be mid summer! I can't remember the last time I went out without my wipers on. Roll on winter!

Would be interested in details of your new switch though. It does occasionally slow down to a drizzle!

I like Zkast's line of thinking. Setting speed and delay with an original knob in the original location would be great with me. But don't stop Church, either solution would be appreciated by many of us, I'm sure. Both of you keep us posted, please.

Dang, I dropped the ball on this one guys.. Sorry.

I'll start working up a schematic for my plan this coming week.
Actually I'm hoping to find a different design of wiper motor that we can use. Our trucks original design just didnt offer much speed selection. Also need it for a intermittant wiper setup.

Hope to have something more by the end of next week!
