S/R Torquers or Sportsman II?
I was just wanting to get some input about the World S/R torquers and the Sportsman II's. What would be the best choice for building a 350-400 HP 355 for my '74 GMC long bed? I am not sure what cam I will be using but I have been thinking about the Comp cams XE265 or XE268. I will probably just run a performer manifold and Carter 625.

this is my set up in my 70 4x4 3/4 ton
350ci bored .040 over sportsman II angled plug heads 64cc flat top pistons 9.5:1 compression performer intake edelbrock 1405 carb (600cfm) comp cams extreme 4x4 cam #12-231-2 stock ratio roller rockers not sure about horse power, but with th350, 4.10 gears, and 33"x12.5" tires from a dead stop on dry pavement it will keep on turning the tires over into 3rd gear no problem (don't want to do that often though) [This message has been edited by 704x4 (edited April 18, 2002).]

I would look at the dart iron eagles,IMO they have some nice features(bronze liners,& a heartshaped chamber). ....69 longhorn.

Does anyone else have a recommendation? I have thought about just having the stock heads milled down to 72cc and do some porting and polishing.

Sportsman IIs are for high performance and racing. You would be better off with the SR Torquer for mild street duty. They have prox 170cc intake port volume for good velocity at low-mid RPM. The Sportsman IIs have 200cc intake ports for better flow at higher RPMs at the expense of low speed throttle response. The Sportman IIs would also work best with a bigger cam and Performer RPM manifold. By the way, I have Dart Iron Eagles and cannot recommend them. Very sloppy castings, lower head bolt bosses are too thick for standard head bolt lengths, intake ports don't match gaskets, etc, etc. Frankly, if I were buying new cast iron heads, I'd get the Chevy Vortecs for prox $420 a pair or the SR Torquers. The Vortecs do require a Vortec manifold (Edelbrock makes 'em) and center-bolt valve covers, and maybe better springs, but they flow like crazy. The SR Torqers are ready-to-go right out of the box and let you choose from 67cc or 76cc chamber size. The Vortecs are 64cc.
