Frame or Cab...What does the title go to and/or with???

I am trying to figure out the best way for me to do this next
68' SWB, "Frame Off". If I buy a rolling frame does the title go with the frame...or does the title go with the cab? Since it will be a frame off nothing spared, maybe it makes more sense for me to buy a 71' or 72' rolling frame that already has the disc brake front end and then I'd need to find a cab and 68' front clip. I have a new wood floor bed and tailgate sitting here in my office, so don't need a bed.

Or.....should I go the other way and find a good 68' SWB complete and sell the bed....and add the 71'-72' disc front end?

What is the best way to go? Anyone have experience with this type of situation?

Thanks

Alex

it depends on your state.
Some say it MUST match both (cali) some say one or the other.
Call your DMV or see there www. site

Get the title with the matching frame & vin tag. Put the vin tag on any cab you want to use! You will then have a correct, legal, more valuable, matching # truck.
Some people don't care, but their trucks are then pretty limited in what & where they can sell them.
It just isn't that hard to get them "right".

Sounds like solid advise...OK maybe I'll start to look for a rolling 71'-72' frame with the title and vin tag, and see how that search goes!

For me in Cali; The DMV wanted the title and the frame number to match. They said they would make a tag for my cab. The person there told me the cab is just like sheetmetal replacement part.

I am in the process of selling a Blazer tub, it will have No title or vin
plate, and a Blazer chassis, it Will have a title and vin plate, just like
Pickmup said, you can mix and match anything, just check ur state.

So I makes the most sense that the vin plate and title stay with the frame. As stated above the cab is just sheelmetal and can be easily changed as we all know.

So you will end up with a 71-72 truck title and vin, that looks like a 68 truck. I think I would rather have a 68 title and change frames or change to disk/5 lug. Whenever I see a certain year truck titled say like a72 and yet it looks like a 68, that just kills the truck for me. Of course I guess it depends on your states requirements. In Texas, practically all they need is a title.

Re: Frame or Cab...What does the title go to and/or with???

I would say it should go with the cab.
It sounds like very few states compare all three. What does your state do?

The odds of it being checked are slim. It is more likely it will be compared to the cab then with your frame.

IMO - swapping VIN plates on cabs of cars and trucks is fraud any way you try to polish it... There is a reason that selling the plates on ebay and forums like this is banned

I looked on mine and I don't see any #'s there??? Your saying drivers side, top of frame, opposite the power steering box and rag joint? I see nothing?

In Missouri it's the vin tag with the cab and it is against the law here to alter or change the vin tag. They can actually confiscate your truck if they see the vin has been altered in any way. Check with your state, they are all different.

Dangit, Bobby! I am in the process of taking the cancer trashed body off of a 72 C20 to switch the body off of a 68 C10 onto it. I have the title for the 68, but want the dana 60 w/ rear leafs and front discs frame. I'm not crazy about 8 lugs and 16.5 rims, but that might change later.

This is irresponsible advice at best, and illegal in most (if not all) states. Just because you may "get by with it" in some places does not make it right....and may casue problems when traveling, selling or moving across state lines later.

pa only requires a VIN sketch when you get the title... so my cab is my truck, or atleast the plate is...

Here's mine on a 1970 Chevrolet. Sorry camera phone sucks but at least you can see exactly where the #'s are at.

Re: Frame or Cab...What does the title go to and/or with???

Ok, found the frame stamp. Frame stamp was Z663882 which is the same last seven, letter + numbers on my VIN plate. Thank you for the pic and help! Now I know what to look for.

It is possible there is a 1 before the Z on the frame, but I would have to scrape the paint. I can see all the other numbers and just checked the paper title...everything matches.

Re: Frame or Cab...What does the title go to and/or with???

Some states will give you an "assembled vehicle" title where the frame and cab VINs don't match. I have the same issue -- Using a 1972 cab on my '67 4x4. But changing the VIN plate sounds like asking for trouble. The VIN plate from the '72 will be innacurate, but that's the breaks.
