I'm confused

I was under the impression that all 1971 trucks have disc brakes. I was cleaning my wheels and noticed that I don't have disc's. I have drums. The truck was originally a 6 banger. So I figured that the manual brakes were standard for the 6 banger. I guess that will be my next project.

Re: I'm confused

Disc brakes were standard on all trucks in 71'. Some were power, some wern't. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: I'm confused

My 71 stepside came from the factory with a 6 cyl and disk brakes on the front. I was also under the impression that they all came that way in 71.

Re: I'm confused

They all came with disks. your truck either isn't a real 71, or, some one robbed your truck of it's brakes and installed there old brakes and pawned it off on someone.

I'd be tripple checking the VIN with the title...then the frame vin too.

I looked at the number near the steering box and I found 1Z624288. My VIN is CS149J008547.

Re: I'm confused

Well, your FRAME is a 71... but your CAB... that's a 69.
You have a total mutt.
Better find your title and see what it matches up to. And, you may want to contact you DMV, it'll be a bunch of hassle and BS, but it's better than the police saying "your registration isn't for this truck, it's for another truck... here's a $400 ticket for improper registration, you can get your impounded truck at this address once it is registered properly... have a nice day."

Re: I'm confused

Utah has a 'Reconstucted Vehicle' title availible. I know. I had to get one a few years ago when I put a cab on a blazer frame. I had to go to the DMV at the Salt Lake fairgrounds and stand in every single line! It took all day. But at the end of the day, they came out and removed my vin tag and put on a new one that matched the new title they gave me.

Re: I'm confused

Something else looks funny there... the last 6 digits... should start with a 1...right after the J. I have NEVER heard of a Chevy starting with vehicle #1, they always start with 100001

Re: I'm confused

I looked at tag on the drivers door and pulled this VIN. It is CS141Z624288. The other VIN was off the glove box. I'm still confused. It looks like the VIN matches the frame but the glove box is off another truck. Really weird.

Re: I'm confused

It is CS141Z624288. Somehow the sticker on the glovebox has a different VIN than the frame and cab. So I guess I don't have a mutt. I still have a grill from a 1969. But of course this can be interchanged with any year. I'll change it back to a 71 grill later on. Unfortanlely, I don't have contact with the PO. I bought the truck from a dealer in Texas. Thanks Longhorn Man
