Air condition?

I have a 78 Chevy bonanza 1/2 ton that I cannot get the air conditioner clutch compressor to engage. I Jumped it out with a wire off the battery and it will work. Does anyone know where the fuse is located that cuts the compressor on?
It is not on the fuse block I checked all of them and they are good.
Also will the compressor designed to not come on when low on freon? Maybe that is the problem.
The fan motor works fine.

Re: Air condition?

Yes, there is a switch that will prevent it from coming on when the freon is low. On my '86 it is on the drier/accumulator, the only wires that go to it.

Re: Air condition?

On passenger side near firewall there is a plug that connects to a pressure switch one the AC line. Unplug it and jumper the plug with a piece of wire. It should make the compressor come on. If it does then you are low on freon.

Re: Air condition?

As said above--There is a black rubber plug connected to the aluminum accumulator on the heater housing. Unplug that and stick a jumper wire into the plug assembly, the compressor should engage the clutch. This is a sensor for a low freon charge.

Re: Air condition?

Thanks for the feedback on the air condition. I jumped out the pressure switch and the compressor came on. Now I think I will change to the new freon, since I gave my brother in law my last 3 cans of R-12 that I found in the garage at my mothers( STUPID ME live and learn)
Whats is involved with the new freon change over? Is it easy?
