Front brake drum ?
I had to grind 3 rivets off of each of my front drums to get them off. Does this mean that I had the original 36 year old drums on the truck and the PO's have been pulling the hub off the spindle to change shoes??

I've seen it quite a bit.
The replacement ones at the parts store suck... you'd be better off locating old originals that can still be turned. |

It seems that was GM's way of making you inspect or at least look at the wheel bearings. I think I remember the service manual saying the front wheelbearings should be inspected and serviced at the same time the shoes are replaced.

back in the day oldtimers would rather go spend half a day in junkyards searching for originals that were usable instead of grinnding the rivets for "replacement drums" or in my fathers case send me

Probably just a P.O. who did his own brakes or had a quality shop do it.If the shoes are always replaced before they wear to the rivets then they wont need turning.I have always pulled the wheel bearings when doing a brake job so I could repack them so they may have been pulled hub and drum together so the wheel bearings could be serviced.

Thanks for all the replies, Guys.
I am reusing these drums since they are in great shape. The rears are a different story. One drum was noticeably lighter than the other and appeared to have been ground too thin. So, I have one drum, all shoes, spring kits and 4 cylinders on order. Bob
