Average cam life?

I have about about 20,000 miles on my 268 Extreme Energy Comp cam and was wondering about how many miles to expect. I've never had a motor together this long!

Re: Average cam life?

From what I'm hearing - not very long, unless you're using motor oil designed for diesel engines. It appears the oil companies have changed their additives in motor oil and it just doesn't lubricate flat tappet camshafts and lifters any longer.

Well i don't know about the oil deal, but I have had a 280H Comp cam and I have been very satisfied with it's performance and durablity. I would say I have 80,000 on it. And when i pulled my motor apart the cam and lifters show no sign of wear yet. Now that has been my experience.

Re: Average cam life?

Jacobs, Thanks for the heads up. I wasn't aware of the change occuring to oil formulas. I did a quick search on the net and it sounds like a person should do a little research if running a flat tappet with much spring pressure. Special oil selection or additives might be in order if one wants to have reasonable life expectancy out of a HighPerformance flat tappet cam.

That's good to hear, I'm just getting ready to fire up a 355 with the 270H -- I plan on using GM EOS for break-in, and I'm still contemplating using 1 bottle per oil change, or using the diesel oil as others have been doing.... but then again.... maybe it's all hogwash!

Re: Average cam life?

I don't know how much truth there is to it but here are a few articles I've found.

Re: Average cam life?

About 10 years ago I saw a demonstration of Boundary oil. It’s supposed to reduce friction and from what I remember, it might eliminate the camshaft/lifter problem. I Googled Boundary oil and found this website. http://www.boundaryfrictioncontrol.c..._fortifier.htm . It seems a little pricy to me but if it works, it just might be worth it. Does anyone know anything about it and give us some insight?
