tilt column ?

i have a van tilt i'm putting in my truck, problem is somtimes it don't want to go from drive to neutral reverse or park it will if i srand it on the wheel end but put horizontaly no go.is it that the lever is warn and not pushing the detent in far enough?when i take the lever off it looks like just a spring it pushes on is there somthing missing? i took it out of a van some time ago and don't think i ever tried shifting it then, i just checked it for slop in the joint and bearings. any ideas? i tried different levers but none seem to be the same on the inner end. i'm stumped!

Re: tilt colume ?

The end of the pointer is broke off down inside the hole and is making it lock up

Re: tilt colume ?

i just took the one out of my 82 van . so i know what it is shaped like that for but the 82 indicator sits much higher so i'll have to get the correct one, hopfully it won't have to come out of another tilt

Re: tilt column ?

Here is a suggestion. On my orange and white 72, it has a tilt. Back in the 70's the colum pulled the same stunt as yours. And yes it was the pointer breakin off. Here is my suggestion, LEAVE THE POINTER OFF. I have no problem telling what gear it is in by just using the lump where the pointer wance was. So if you are out for long term reliability, leave it off. Hope this helps.
