You sure that's a 292??? If that's the original engine then it's not. 292s weren't available until '63 I believe. That looks a lot like a 235 which is what I have in my '62.

That's just what I was told. How do I find out what size it really is and is it worth keeping?

Get the block number and look it up on www.inliners.org. I'm pretty sure that's a 235. If it runs it may be worth keeping. I have a 235 in my truck and love it, but then again I'm partial to inlines! If you want an inline I would suggest looking for a 250 or a 292. More horsepower, torque, and much better design. You also have a normal screw on oil filter instead of the bypass system. Just my 2 cents.
