How to tow a suburban - Uhaul?

Well usually people use their suburbans to tow..Well i'm moving to arkansas as of next week and i do not have my burb road worthy yet. So i need to tow it...Its an 87 1/2 2x4 with a 350/700r4. So what we are planning is leaving it up here in a storage unit for a month, coming back to chicago here to pick it up and tow it down.

Now for the question, how am i going to tow it? uhaul wont let us put it on their trucks..Do i use a Tow bar? Maybe a full trailer? Will it fit? Try to put it on a uhaul?

as long as you dont have wide wheels on the front it will fit on most trailers or dollys. You might have to put sone small wheels on the front for some trailers.

That distance seems an awful long way to use a towbar. If youre not worried about the possible liability with Uhaul should something occur (doubted) then just tell them youre towing an S-10 Blazer or something. Im not sure if their trailers are "rated" for that weight tho. When I trailered my c-10 home it barely squeezed on the Uhaul rig with aftermarket rims so you might want to buy some cheap steelies. You may be money ahead by buying a used trailer, towing the truck back, and selling the trailer again. Sometimes the rates U Haul wants to charge are crazy.

Thanks guys, i still dont know what to do. I think it should fit on a trailer, but the wheels are pretty wide. I'd like to do this the most cost effective way possible.

Another thing i was thinking is maybe renting a truck from enterprise or something similure and trying to find a trailer? I know uhaul says its trailer max is 4000lbs and a suburban weights more then that. If its a dual axle trailer it should hold it just fine, right?

You need to forget about U-Hual and consider an independent rental company. I recently rented an 16' car hauler on Friday afternoon and returned it on Monday morning for 49.95. You are not going to get a deal like that with U-Haul. If they know that you are trying to move your Burb, they won't even rent to you....

okay, i've been checking a few. I still need to measure the truck, i've been lazy. What size trailer would you think i need? Just something to haul 5k lbs? what lenght and width should the trailer have?

well i wouldn't use a two wheel dolly when my brother came and picked up my 72 lwb he made a turn with it and the truck moved off the dolly and crunched the rocker panel ugh right after i had just finished it pretty much that sucked but if you do use a two wheel dolly i'd suggest pulling the driveshaft, yeah you'll lose some fluid but you can fill it back up when you get it there

Yeah but then he has to take the trailer back to Chicago from Arkansas. Unless he finds an indy that has drop off locations in Arkansas. . .

did you look into a towing company? Some have pretty nice rates and they can tow it no problem

Trust me. Dont tow that far with a suburban on a uhaul. Tried it with my 82 c-10 Burb. Trailer scrapes ever chance it gets. Short distance it's fine but I wouldn't push past an hour drive.

If your burb runs and stops, and you can afford it, have it shipped by a pro on an open trailer. You can get some quotes on Uship to get an idea. If you don't have a heavy and powerful enough tow vehicle with a hitch that is safe for at least 7000 lbs (truck plus open trailer) then you are looking at a long and perhaps more costly trip trying to do it yourself.
My 22' enclosed trailer weighs about 3600 lbs. The open trailer I had previously weighed almost 2000 lbs.When I put one of my vehicles in the enclosed trailer, I am close to 7600 lbs. A Burb will be heavier than that. Be safe.
