How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

I've been looking for a short bed truck for sometime now...The ones here in my area were all born long beds. I've been looking on E-Bay for a 71-72 Super Cheyenne Short Bed and all of them claim to be original. Well I would like a little more proof. Since I can't be there to look underneath I would like to know of others ways to authenticate the short bed (fleetside) option from a want to be. I know there is a placard around the drivers door striker that shows weight/capacities. Could someone tell me what it should read if it was an original (fleetside) short bed? I'm guessing but some of those weren't fleetside in the beginning either so would it read the same as a stepside truck? The sticker in the glove box tells you vin number and all the options. Is there anything about the kind of bed on there? I noticed model number in one of the pictures on E-Bay is there anything within that number that might indicate bed style? I wish I could've checked out the truck I'm speaking of on E-Bay I'm pretty sure it was the real deal. It was a Super Cheyenne short bed 4x4 in unmolested condition. It looked to be a little rusty in the worst spots to have rust. Still though I would've liked to look at it but it was to far away. I'm trying to stay in th Colorado to Illinois Texas to Nebraska area...However I'm starting to think most of these were not sold in this area. The ones sold here were sold to farmers for work trucks. Maybe a few sporty models were sold but I'm guessing most were purchased with work in mind, not play. This is my first question on here as a newby and I NEED to know. Thanks

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

I had the same issues/questions, in fact two trucks I went to go see had a cut/shortened frame and it was a done very poorly. Be careful and good luck. Check the SPID label, VIN, and be careful with the SPID label sheets, many people try to re-type the label to authenticate a SWB. You can buy a SPID label on eBay for $5.00.

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

They are around... I found my Cheyenne Super 4x4 swb in Topeka. Took me awhile to find what I wanted, but did find it after sometime. Fixed her up my senior year of high school.... just about ready to rejuvenate the old girl again with a Rust Free Texas bed, a pretty solid cab, and lift her just a shade higher to put on some 37" Goodyear MTR's. Can't wait to tackle it. Good luck with the search.... that's half of the fun. Trevor

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

A lot of SWB trucks around here............they are either not for sale, thought of as gold with prices to match or rusted badly(sheet metal and frames). I have come across lots of SWB frames and VIN Plates though

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

My advice...

Unless you are absolutely sure the cab has not been off the frame, once you have verified the model from the VIN, compare the VIN on the plate in the cab to last few digits of the VIN stamped on the frame (driver's side top just behind the engine). There is another stamping a little farther back, but I can't recall off the top of my head where.

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

Sorry it took me so long to get back I've been working overtime and when I try to get on here I barely get through my e-mail and then ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Ooops sorry did it again. Anyway this is great I can finally tell the difference. I almost bought one that looks just like 71blksuper4x4's truck. I can't remember the year but it was at the Sunflower swapmeet in Wichita Kansas. If I hadn't of had that lay off notice in my hand I would've bought it. Turned out that I didn't get layed off for like another year. I should've bought it and if I would've needed to sold it. That's what I'm going to do from now on. Instantly at the very moment of that decision all opportunities dried up

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

71blksuper4x4 whats your trucks model number I want to check it against the above link. I looked at the link but must not understand all that I see. The forth digit is what determines length of bed correct? Why so many options isn't there only shortbed, longbed, and Crewcab long and short? Forgive me I'm new to this

Re: How do you authenticate a Short Bed truck

Thanks....I think it's the Model number though from what I read, but then I might be wrong. If nothing else can you go through it with me so that I understand what part identifies bed length. THANKS.
