Trouble figureing out which chrome diff. covers will fit my 86.

Well I been considering some chrome diff. covers for my 86 4x4 after I put the lift kit on it a couple weeks ago. I'm not looking for anything fancy just some flashy chrome to stick on it. I love chrome, big fan lol.

Anyways I been browsing my lmc truck book, and comparing to the 86.

What i found out so far is it's 10 bolt front, 12 bolt rear.

Ok.. simple enough? Not quite.

The lmc truck book says a 12 bolt rear was only used from 73-81 hmmm...

No biggie though I found this on ebay, looks exactly like my rear end cover design...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHROM...27393374QQrdZ1

The main problem I have is the front, now by the lmc parts book, the pic of the dana, NO WAY it's a dana, it's gotta be a corp, 10 bolt from gm. it also says with 8-1/2 inch ring gear.

This is where it gets tricky to me, it seems to not be completely round like most I see, but slightly out of shape, something like the rear end but not as badly out of shape, in the sense it's not round. It also has a fil plug on it.

So theese are what i found on ebay....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/10-BO...28782379QQrdZ1

That one looks nothing like it, reminds me of a 7.5 car 10 bolt?

next...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHROM...28675530QQrdZ1

That to me is like a 8.5 car rear end like old camaro or g-body?

This is the closest I found, but I'm not sure because mine doesn't seem to have thoose little kick outs on the sides....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CHROM...27688736QQrdZ1

Mines sort of seems to not be that rounded though. I can get a picture of my axles if needed. What would you all think on the front one? I think the last one if any would work or be the closest, plus it's the only one with a fill plug. Maybe somebody with a 10 bolt front has a chrome cover and can give me info on it.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

Re: Trouble figureing out which chrome diff. covers will fit my 86.

I know quite a few people that put chrome diff covers on and had nothing but problems with them leaking. As for the truck's rears, if it's a 1/2 ton and all stock it will have truck 10 bolts front and rear...

1. dont waste your money on chrome diff covers, you might as well cover them with soda cans.

2. what wieght rate is the truck. 1/2-3/4-1t ? you can have a few rear axles but you wont have a stock 12b.

1/2t IS!!!! a 10 bolt

3/4t can be either a 9.5" 14b semi floater, it look very very close to a 10b cover justa little bigger and with 8 lug, or it can be a 10.5" 14b full floater, very large daimond shaped cover, 8 more bolts in side the of the wheel studs, forward removable pinoin.

1t IS!!! the 14b ff

There is a clear plexiglass cover in Summit's catalog that look cool plus it makes checking fluids a breeze but its kinda pricey but hey least I could admire that pricey Eaton posi.

Truth is Chevy designed the covers to direct oil to axle tubes so I would be concerned with other covers.

It`s hard to wax a differential cover.Unwaxed chrome rusts. If you`re lucky, enough oil will leak to keep rust away. You have a 10-bolt unless it`s been changed.

Guys I know how chrome is and I know it rusts but chrome is what I like, the way I see it use more rtv to seal it, simple as that IMO.

It's a 1/2 ton truck. IT HAS a 12 bolt rear end. It also has a 10 bolt front.

Here is a truck 10 bolt cover pic

Here is a truck 12 bolt cover pic

Like the guys have said.. If it was stock you would have a diff cover like the first picture... About '81-'82 up chevy 4x4 trucks have this rear end

Some have been changed.. If yours has from a previous owner I would double check the gear ratio and make sure it they both match.. Alot of 12 bolts came through with 3.73 gears and 4.11's

Most if not all 80's 10 bolts were 2.73 to 3.08's

Re: Trouble figureing out which chrome diff. covers will fit my 86.

That 2nd pic is exactly what REAr end I have, and my front does have the 2 ears on the bottom but I didn't think it looked as rounded, or had the slight kick outs on the top middle parts.

I thought the same on the rearend being changed out. It feels like it doesn't have that great of ratio but we are running 33's, and the 4wd works great. I do need to change the fluid anyways, so I was looking at a chance to improve the looks and change oil in them as well.
