1969 full floating axle
I reasently bought a 69 custom camper with 396, turbo 400, ac, tilt and hd springs, I am not familliar with these rear ends. had to trailer it home cause left axle was stickin out a few inches. when I got home I jacked it up on the trailer, romoved the wheel and drum, and was able to reinstall the axle, with some gentle taps of a mallot. Can anyone tell me what the proper fix is. truck will drive now but for how long?

Re: 1969 full floating axle
Thanks Tim. From what I gathered from the link you sent, the lock nuts or tab washer must have come loose or broke. I hope the threads are not striped. I'll pull it apart in the morning. Thanks again. Mike
BTW My other truck is a 70 chevy longhorn,350/400,a/c,pb,ps.and all original with 94000 miles. |

Re: 1969 full floating axle
Tore it apart yesterday, quite simple really, the lock washer or spindle washer as they call it, had broken it's locking tab so the nuts backed off. The threads got a little goobered up but I was able to gat them back in shape with a v shaped file and then run the nuts back an forth. I relaced the seal, bearings, nuts and lock washer and it went back together like new.
Thanks Tim for your help |
