All Power cuts out

Recently my 71 started to die on me. When I am driving, I will loose all electrical power for a few seconds. Motor dies, radio dies, volt guage dies to. after a few seconds, it will start up and I am on my way. The truck has a 350 in it with the serpentine system from a 90 chevy truck. Everything else is stock. Has anyone experienced this before? I don't know where to begin looking, so any help would be greatly apreciated.

thanks
Jason

Re: All Power cuts out

If everything is dying, check your main battery cables for a loose ground.

Re: All Power cuts out

Do you still have the old external voltage regulator? That could be the source of your problems. Also check both battery cables, check voltage across the battery with the engine off and again with the engine running. Best of luck.

Re: All Power cuts out

Sounds like the battery is shorting out internally.

Re: All Power cuts out

Mine did that. I had a short on the ignition wire at the starter. We found it by pulling it in the garage and turning off the lights and trying to start it. We was able to see a spark down by the ignition.

Also just recently that same wire was burned through from touching the headers, which would short it when I tried to start it.

Re: All Power cuts out

I have checked the battery cables, the distribution block. I do not have the external regulator. It happened again to me about 5 times on my ride home tonight. Something is telling me it is the ignition switch. Is this possible?

Re: All Power cuts out

i had a 70 that was doing this, theres no predetermined time or distance, sometimes it was 5 feet other times it was 10 miles. on mine it was the junction box on the firewall. my ignition wire was stock for the old truck and was the kinf that had the cloth insulation. by looking at it you couldnt tell till you felt it, it was hot. i had to drill a hole in the forewall and run my new ignition wire from the starter to the switch with an inline fuse (make sure you put in a fuse). hoope this helps you
