Did I waste my money?!

I was off today therefore decided to go junk yard hunting for the rear hub snap ring that I ruined during my disc conversion process. After finding a C20 and taking the hubs off I noticed this power steering box and pump still on the engine. Since I don't have power steering I jumped at it. I paid $ 100 for it. Did I waste my money?

Re: Did I waste my money?!

I can't say if you wasted your money or not. I would guess that it depends on how bad you wanted power steering.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

I ask myself that same question every single day.

As for the parts, I would agree with Tony. I got power steering free from the donor truck I bought for the motor. I could have gotten a setup of Craigs List for $30. But I have also seen people who ask $100+, but it's all in whay you're willing to pay.

I would hope for that price it won't need a rebuild.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

You'll have to heat and dimple your frame to do it right since you have a 67. Be ready for the brackets and pullies to not work.
If they are in good shape, you did OK...a little steep for u-pull-it prices IMO, but I've seen worse.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

I dont think $100 is bad for a pump and gearbox. I`ve sold the pump and brackets alone for $75. Even if the pump is bad, Its cheap to rebuild.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

You don't need to dimple the frame.

Just space it out. You do not lose anything by doing it except unecessary metal work.

I spaced mine out using washers. I do donuts, I go off jumps (would not recommend by the way), and just about everything stupid. The power steering still works 100 percent and it's all junkyard parts. It doesn't wear down anything, not that you should care because it's all junkyard parts in the first place.

It doesn't even look tacky. It's too small and insignificant t even notice that it has been spaced out by washers. Everyone should be looking at the mill anyway

*No disrespect Longhorn Man as you definetly know what you're talking about and you're not a dick. But so far no one has proven to me as to why it MUST have a dimple and why spacing is so BAD.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

becouse the gear is no longer riding on the hardened center portion and causes excelerated wear, and the added leverage can EASILY break the bold that hold it on.
GM coulda saved a LOT of money by putting washers on longer bolts instead of retooling for a little dimple.
I'll be the first to call the idiots at GM retards... but I have to side with them on this.
Heat the frame till it's red, beat it with a large ball peen hammer, and let it cool slowly.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

While i dont agree with washers to space the box.....I would prefer to build a steel "plate type" spacer to bolt the box on the frame, as to heating it. the box does need to be centered when the truck is running straight, but the adjustment can be made up in the tierods. The only down side would be the turning radius will be a tad shorter one way(1/2" shouldnt hurt too much tho) crazyL

Re: Did I waste my money?!

$100 is about right.Less is great. But,it would have been better to have gotten the full conversion from the one truck(pulleys & brackets)whatever the price.

space it out, hell your only dealing with 30" tires in an on road only situation, its not like your going to rip the box off hopping speed bumps at the mall.

Are you sure about that.I`m no scientist, but I know there`s alot of force required to move a 4000# object forwards, backwards, sideways,up,or down.Yet,it`s easy to put one in the ditch.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

JB-Weld!!I used to use bailing twine, but I moved off the farm.
Check the 69-72 Blazer section.I know they`re 4wds,but bolted directly to the frame from factory. Two guys,so far,are talking about the steering gear falling off from sheared bolts.Granted,it prolly started with a loose bolt or two. But,I`d be checkin`my bolts/washers for that purdy often on a homegrown p/s swap.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

Nima, don't have any pictures. Sure can get some though tomorrow after work.

When I mentioned about how "durable" the spacer idea was (concerning bad driving and what not) I was just pointing out that it's not that big a deal. Losing a 1/2" in the turning radius doesn't really haunt me and so far the tie rod and it's hardware is in tip-top shape (for being 40 years old atleast).

I'm not arguing that the dimple idea is stupid, as evidently it's stock on 69-72 trucks. All I'm getting at is that the spacer idea (whether it be wasehrs or a custom plate) shouldn't be ridiculed as "jerry-rigged" or anything like that.

I'm sorry for being stupid, but I don't quite understand what you mean. Are you talking about the shaft inside the box, or is the casing of the box supposed to be cradled in the dimple? And wouldn't the wear problem only be with the stock rag joint?

I'm just thinking that aftermarket u-joints can replace the rag joints and the box would never have a clue as to how axial the input shaft is. And it would take lot of force to break four grade eight bolts just by having the pitman arm offset from stock by a fraction. (Granted I haven't mapped out the geometry on one of these trucks, so it might be huge.)

Re: Did I waste my money?!

Just another thought...I think it was the bean counter who decided to add the dimple. Looking at the number of trucks built and the one time shot of adding the dimple versus adding spacers the assembler has to run the bolt thru, add changing the steering geometry?? and an additional part it's just plain cheaper.

Re: Did I waste my money?!

They added the dimple just because the p/s box is physically larger.Hey,if it works...it`s your truck. But,when you alter/mod you`re on your own.Heck, look at all the frame-grafts out there.I`m sure there are plenty that would say that`s dangerous. And,it can be.I learned something reading that link to CPP.I always thought only a`75 or earlier steering box would fit a 67-72 4wd because I bought one from GM and that`s how it was listed.I`ve seen and heard of others using newer boxes and wondered what it took. It`s just that the hose fittings went to metric in`76 so you need those hoses to match. How simple is that?
