Powder coating alum
Has anyone ever powder coated alum rims. I have a set of dually rims that I have to keep polishing. I know most come from the factory clear coated. Mine are not any more. So I can't decide what to do. Strip them and clear coat or I thought of power coating them. I heard they have a powder that ends up looking like chrome when done. Has anyone had this done ? Or does anyone do power coating themselves ? Maybe give me some input, on the material and a ball park price ? Thanks

I have done a ton of aluminum powder. Mostly valve covers and intake manifolds. I shoot gloss clearover the raw aluminum and it looks great. I have a high gloss "chrome" that looks good when you shoot a clear over the top, I also have a straight aluminum color that looks good with clear as well.
With a polished wheel, the powder may not stick. You would have to strip the wheels for a good powder job. I shot a raw aluminum mountain bike frame with a clear nickel metal flake powder I have and it looked nearly as cool as chrome in the sunlight. Last edited by jimmydean; 09-20-2006 at 12:15 AM. |

Jimmydean, do you do tyour own pc? I'm looking for someone to pc a valve cover and an intake for me if you're interested.

I had aluminum diamond plate on top of my utility bed powdercoated with BC/CC (charcoal grey) powdercoat as well as the steel diamond plate bumper,ladder racks,and side steps on a work truck.I had problems with the clear lifting on everything but the aluminum.It got wore down to a dull finish,yet stuck like glue,no flaws.Everything was shot at different times.I think it works better on aluminum due to the conductive nature of aluminum,just my theory.The aluminum was sand-blasted first.I also had the another truck with straight gloss black powdercoat on diamond plate aluminum and steel racks with the same good results.It really "grabs" on aluminum,not like paint.
