GM & Ford merger

Did anyone else hear about GM & Ford talking about a merger/alliance a couple of months ago? That would be messed up. Here's an article about it.

That would be messed up. I don't see it happening. If it does happen I don't see how the antitrust regulators could have anything to say after letting the exxon-mobil merger happen. That was a big f@#$ up letting the oil companies merge.

I can't wait to buy one of the new CaddiLincoln MarkDe'villes, or the F1500 SilverRanger trucks when they come out.

It's hard to get your mind around it at first but look at the airline industry; it's essentially a two horse race now with Boeing and Airbus.

Re: GM & Ford merger

GM was also talking about a merger with Toyota, but decided that their new line of "ToyLet" trucks might not be readily accepted by consumers.

Kinda funny, because at the moment the other thread about it is directly above this one

I think GM is currently doing well enough to where they no longer have a "need" to merge with anyone at the moment. As far as GM merging with Toyota, I think it would piss off more Toyota owners than GM (with the idea that GM would bring Toyota's quality down.) This was dispelled as a rumor anyway, apparently Toyota was talking to Ford though. GM was talking with Nissan, but GM's market share is holding steady and NIssans has been on a decline and their quality has also been called into question (especially on the Titans.) GM merging with Ford? If I could step back and look at if from a non GM fan I could see it making sense. Two companies that make some of the best trucks in the world merging to solidify the "american" truck industry. They need help with cars, but they're getting there. A Ford and GM merger COULD be a good thing. BUT if you take a look at what's happening, neither company has a positive cash flow and in this case two negatives don't make positive! (Hence my post that it would be a disaster in the other thread.) Then if you look at it from a GM or Ford loyolist, you'd piss off so many customers, and lead they to toyota and dodge, that you'd be crazy to merge.

My take on it

Re: GM & Ford merger

I agree with 67chevyredneck on this I would say a merger will never happen, however I can forsee alot more colaboration by the two on transmissions and possible even powerplants eventually.

Re: GM & Ford merger

If it makes for better vehicles, who cares? It happened in the early years. Some merged, some were sucked-up.I would like to see more of a difference between them than the differences between the GM lines or Ford lines now.The big two share component brands now and the trucks have for many years(Dana/Spicer,New Process,Kelset-Hayes...).It bugs me to see the long-time dealers that I always associated with one brand selling their competition at another location. It started with the Domestics picking up a foreign line.I thought,"Do you want us to buy American or not?"Now,it`s a dealer that sells Ford over here,Chrysler over there, and GM down there.I want to ask the salespeople,"Which brand is better?"We get used to the way things are. But,in reality everything is always changing.
