Timing and smoking issue
Hello,
Just replaced a Q-jet and stock intake with a Holley 1850-3 (600CFM) and Edelbrock performer intake (2101) on my stock 327 4 speed (also added HEI). It's a used carb so I am looking to rebuild it but... It surges at idle and is smoking like crazy now! I have heard that a vacuum leak could cause the surging but the smoke too? I set the timing to all places and it does the same, so it's back to TDC. (what's the best timing for this?) Should I rebuild carb then try again or search for a leak (best method?) The mixture screws on the Holley seem to do nothing either. black smoke could be way too rich
white smoke bad seal of intake manifold and your leaking coolant into the intake ports that rubber fuel line is the classic way to burn your truck to the ground

mostly black smoke....mixture screws don't change anything so I figure a rebuild couldn't hurt. Fuel line is only temp, works fine until I put truck on the road...just don't get it near the exhaust! thanks...

Inspect rubber fuel lines,you`ll be fine.4" or 24".the same risk.There must be a reason they make fuel-rated hose.

It's fuel rated rubber hose....
I am still trying to find out info on the surging and smoking...should I start with the carb and rebuild it? Blown power valve?
The mixture screws not working sounds like you've got the throttle plates open too far, possibly compensating for the extra richness (mmmm, sounds like one of those Pilsbury commercials ---- sorry, it's lunchtime and I'm hungry!)
