86 GMC Stepside Help

I am thinking of changing my Intake and Carb. As of now I have a stock casting intake and A Quadrajet carb (4BBL). My question. What is a good carb to use? This engine is stock and I don't want to put to much into the top end. I have been told that a Holley 650 double pumper is to much. What carbs are good from Holley and what carbs are good from Edelbrock?

As far as the intake, I was thinking edelbrock performer series.

My truck is attatched.
