gas filler behind taillight

This seems like a pretty cool idea... does anyone know if there would be any problems with starting a fire though? electric wires and burnng hot bulbs against a gas cap kinda make me say dont do it

What kind of tach is in that truck? Looks factory but it reads to 8000 RPM, doesnt really look like a camaro tach either.

Re: gas filler behind taillight

ive seen this done on a european car too they cut out the rearlicht bucket made it watertight and had the wires run trough a pipe and made another bucket behind it with the gasfiller .
it worked like this they pushed a button and a solenoid would pop the (wrap around the corner ) light out out about 5 inches than they rotated it a quarter to the side so they could reach the gascap .
i think this way would be eazier on this flat type of light though i would make some sort of a overflowcollector under the gascap though

you think a magnet would work.. kind like those glass doors on stereo cabinets... where you just push it and it pops open...

Give Yank a PM. He did that with his truck and can provide you the info you'll probably need to make it work.

Some BMWs and Infinitis have that style latch on the fuel door. Good luck finding one in the junkyard though... Looks like he is using a remote pull style and welded a latch to the back of the bucket.

Looks like a very clean setup. Appears they had to flip the taillights upside down to make it work. Might run into some problems if you are running a bumper too.

Re: gas filler behind taillight

72MARIO started this mod on his truck and then scrapped the idea because it wasn't working out 100%. I believe that there was too much movement in the hinge or something like that. You could PM him as well if you wanted to go any further.

But, if you look at Yank's version...there is no clearance issue where the bumper is concerned. It pivots the bottom end back into the opening itself.
So, ideally, if you combined the opening action (tucking back inside the fender) that Yank used, and the low profile light socket that is used on the e-bay truck...the would be plenty of room for filling the tank!
Pretty clever up close.
Here are two pics I have of Yank's.

Re: gas filler behind taillight

Putter, did you get these pics first hand? Just wondering if you have laid eyes on this yourself and can elaborate on some of the subleties.

Looks like a single pivot hinge. What holds it in place when closed?

Re: gas filler behind taillight

I'm just getting started with this mod myself. I like Yank's design. I'm thinking about using LEDs, and I'm hoping that it will help with the clearance problems. Hopefully I can do away with the old bulb socket. What kind of hinge is that? Is it spring loaded?

Well now you got me thinking. I saw the truck last year too, I thought that he went with a fuel cell between the frame with a fill down through the wood floor.
