It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
So I sold my '69 Stepper last October actually and have been on and off about getting another truck to keep my '33 FordHotRod company & I need something to putz around in and maybe haul a trailer every once-in-a-while.
Anyway reading through the local "Swapper" I stumble across an ad for a '71 K-10 for Cheap. Call the guy up, go check it out and drive it home. I really would rather have a 3/4ton - but for the price "I had to have it" DOH! the wife just laughed when we pulled up to pick it up this afternoon. Specs: - '71 K10 - 350 (Original - appears to be)/350 Auto/some type of Transfer case - I don't know much about 4x4s - but I am going to learn now I guess. - Owner just had the tranny rebuilt and has a reciept for $700 and change with a date of 07/06 - Motor Leaks EVERWHERE - so it will probably come out for a cleaning and re-seal as it runs sweet! - Edlebrock Intake, BRAND NEW Holley Double Pumper - (I'll probably take that off as I think it is too much for the truck) - Bed is in nice shape - someone cut the DR side for a saddle tank - I'll do something better with that I think. - A/C cab - needs rockers and 1 corner - but Supports are all good & I got new Rockers with the deal. - Cab has some rust issues in the roof as some old trucker must have owned it and put those A/M clearance lights on it. - Needs a seat as someone adapted some junk mid 80's Caddy Split Bucket set-up into it. - Even got the 1971 Owner's Manual with it - in Super Nice Shape (still in the bag ) Overall Pretty nice - the oil slick underneath it must have helped preserve it a little better up here in NewEngland A little TLC and it should be a 1/2way decent work rig. Anybody know what size tires this thing had on it from GM????? - cause those tires & wheels are FUGLY!!!!!!! and JUNK - Any help would be appreciated as I can't decifer the Owner's Manual as to what it is supposed to have on it 15" or 16" and what size looks like the Factory ones??? - Thanks Here are a couple pics for you pic whores!! (oh and the plates aren't registered so - won't worry about them in the picture

Back up for the A/M and Day Crew
-What do you think - BIG POS ??? -Factory Tire Size???? Oh yeh - and is there a Tech Article on Rebuilding the front driveshaft on these??? - I have the front shaft, but when the tranny was replaced the tranny guy told the guy that it needed to be rebuilt so he left it out - one of the U-joints is definatley wasted from what I can tell.

Good find there.Do tou want radial sizes?I have a book to check and get back to you with. They`ll be sias sizes and sae, like 7.50x16 etc. There were several choices.in rim diameter alone.!5" was standard with 16" an option.A high-flotation 8.25x16.5 wheel was available with a 10.00x 16.5 tire.I think 235/85x15 would be as close to standard for today`s rubber.

Yeh Radial Size would be great. I don't want "WIDE" rims - 5" or 6" I think is about right and I'm not sure if the truck had 15"s or 16"s on it. My owner's Manual says something like:
#1. KS-KE10 (04,34 Models) G 78-15B (for 5200 GVW - 115" WB & 5600 GVW - 127" WB) #2. KS-KE10 (06,16 Models) G 78-15B (for 5200 GVW - 127" WB) H 78-15B (for 5600 GVW - 127" WB)

About your transfer case. That would be the venerable NP205,all gear cast iron case.If those mirror arms don`t have adjustable tobes, they appear to be the 67/68 Jr.west coasts.I like them, trucky yet not too big.

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
Gret looking truck...nice score I had 31 10.50 radials on my 71 1/2 ton 4wd and they fit about perfect. A little thinner might have been nice, but they didn't stick out past the fenderwells. As far as the front driveshaft, I've never seen one that needs "rebuilt." I've replaced the u joints, but that was it. Have fun with your great new ride

I'll check to see if there are any markings on them. Like I said I think a "Trucker" owned this @ one point because of the Mirrors and the Clearance lights and there was a visor on it @ one point - so they really butched up the roof (oh and those dumb mud flaps) I was able to read a little on the Glove Box plate this AM and found out: it was a 350/350 Factory (so i'm hoping the motor is original as it is the early non-emmisions BS (more HP too) Also found that it is a "34" Model - whatever that means Original Color was Medium Blue/White (does that mean it had a white roof and blue body???) Tires were G78-15 "B" - Not sure that relates to in a radial though Is that NP205 good???? or are they the bad ones that everyone rags on?

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
The NP205 is a great transfer case. Very stout.
Is the front driveshaft a CV style? They can be a bit pricey to rebuild. I took the one in from my 70 K5 and it was cheaper for them to put in a totally new cv rather than repair the one I had. Looks like a great truck that should be fun to work with.

Here are some more pictures Is the Transfer Case still a NP205??? Those were the only numbers I saw on the back of the case. Any what about the Front Hubs??? - WTF are those and why do they have grease fittings in them??? - I've never seen that before (sorry I'm a PITA - I am totally new to the 4x4's - i've been looking through the 4x4 section as well)

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
Cool truck, a buddy of mine has the orange twin to that up in Wyoming.
That is a CV style driveshaft. That monster is a 205 t-case. The only thing some rock crawler folks don't like about the NP205 is that the low range isn't super low. Other than that, they are nuclear blast proof. I've heard of people running them behind blown big-blocks with no mods. Never seen anyone put zerks in their hubs, but maybe it's ok; seems similar to the idea behind the 'bearing buddy' hubs on boat trailers.

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
About the tire size, you`re right.I got to thinking about that yesterday and realized I needed to correct that.It should be 235/75,Oops!!
The 205/CV set-up is the hot ticket. My trans shop says the only thing they ever need are leaks fixed sometimes. The hubs are quality aftermarket. The zerks were added, not a bad move.Lock-out hubs were an option. At one point, earlier, they weren`t an option and these hubs were developed by the aftermarket. The factory followed suit. So,your's may not have come with them,or yours broke and got replaced. The paint could have been as you said.It depends on the model as well. Can you read if it had Cheyenne or CustomSportTruck equipment. The paint code numbers vary for a given color depending on paint scheme.I wonder if your truck had upper moulding that`s been removed. If it had it,it was likely white between mouldings.Look at the back edges of the doors where the moulding would be.It was bolted through there,so there would be holes filled.I had a`72 CustomDeluxe/10 that had the med.blue/white top/lower moulding.Could be it`s twin.

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
As others have pointed out a K10 had 15 inch rims stock. 6-lugs. Its a 71 so you have front disc brakes. Be careful when you buy new rims. Test one on the front before you buy. MANY 6-lug rims fit the bolt pattern but won't clear the brake caliper up front.
Stock tires were approximately 28" tall. I have 235/75R15s on my truck. When comparing the speedo to a GPS it is dead nuts on so that must be close to original. If you have 373 rear end gears your speedo cable will be connected directly to that beautiful NP205 transfer case. If you have 308s, there will be a little gear box screwed into the transfer case and your speedo cable screwed into that. You won't break the NP205. Its bullet proof. The tranny is probably a th350 if that was a rebuild of the stock piece. I would find a known drive line shop and hand them that front shaft. Tell them you want it rebuilt. Don't screw around with it. I friend of mine had one come through the floor on the passenger side and land in the seat next to him. Good thing nobody was sitting there.

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
AWESOME!!! I Love this place. I haven't contributed much in the past year other than being a "site supporter" because of the sale of my old stepper - but you guys always step up to help a truck brother out.
#1. Great on the Trasfer Case!! - that makes me happy #2. The Hubs - not sure about them - there is an option on the glove box sticker that says something about Locking Hubs - it is kinda tough to read though. #3. The truck is a Cheyenne - sticker option. #4. Pretty sure they are 3.08's in the rears as there is a little gear box on the speedo cable @ the transfer case (although when driving it home the other day it seemed to be winding up @ 75-80 MPH with 3.08's that sucker should purrrr down the road) -Side note - the Speedo seems to be Dead Nuts with the Wifes Car - so that is good...didn't expect that to work #5. TH350 was the original equipment - as it is listed on the glove box #6. Thanks for the warning on the rims - guess I'll be @ the junk yard in the next couple of weeks (as he'll let me take whatever rims I want) #7. Thanks for the Suggested Tire Size!!! She's got a little vibration @ 55-65MPH - but then goes away @ 67MPH or so. I think the first think I'll do is replace the rear drive shaft U-Joints and get some decent tires to see if that fixes the vibration. Steering is pretty sloppy - PO said it is in the tie rods/drag links - I'll have the wife help me check it out tonight

Re: It Starts again - Another truck after a 1year Hiatus (SP?)
Sorry for so many posts - I'm just excited about my new truck
Edit: I Lied It had the CustomSportTruck option 1Z84ED was the number next to it. 1626AA Parchment Trim?? And paint Code looks to be 1542AA White/Medium Blue It has "Cheyenne" badges on the fenders - so that threw me of for a second. Doesn't look like it ever had the top moulding either. Whoever painted the truck burgundy did everything - jambs, dash, glove box, inside roof, so it was a complete color change @ one time. I'd be interested in seeing what the paint looked like from the factory does somebody know what the 1542AA White/Medium Blue option looked like? Also says Tinted Glass - the back window has that stick on crap but I don't wee where the side glass is tinted unless it was very light. Power Steering Heavy Duty Battery A/C Guages 350 V8 Turbo Hydramatic 1F76AA "Front Wheel Lock Hub" There is Blue Paint under the Option List - so I'm going to assume that it is original to the truck since the VIN matches the door jamb VIN as well.
