Question Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

I'm thinking about swapping hoods on my 72 to a 67. Will i need to swap fenders also? Will my 72 grill surround work with the 67 hood. I think the 67 hood looks great on lowered trucks.
On a side note, back in the early to mid 90's there was a 67-72 truck that was red, black with silver graphics. Had a phantom grill and the first 18+" rims I had seen on this year truck. It was a regular in classic truckin' and other rags of the type. Anybody know which vehicle I am refering to? Anybody have pics or info on it?

The whole front clip, including the rad support is different.

67-72 GMC front clips and 67-68 Chevy you can do some swapping.

69-72 Chevy are interchangable only with each other........

Now I do have a yard truck that is a 72 and it has a GMC hood on it that fits correctly...so go figure?!!?!

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

with exception to trim holes... 67/68 hoods are the same GMC or Chevy
With exception to trim holes, 69 - 72 hoods are the same GMC or Chevy.

I have a 71/72 hood on my 69 GMC front clip.

In order to run a chevy grill;
if you want the 67/68 hood, you'll have to run 67/68 fenders (or hire a heluva body man and pay him stupid money to graft the old nose on the new hood) In order to run the 67/68 fenders, you'll need a 67/68 core support, and grill.

If you want a GMC grill, you'll need a 67/68 grill and top bar (actually any GMC grill with the 67/68 top bar) and core support. Any year GMC fenders can be used. 68 - 72 used the same fenders on the GMC side of the house... and that fender is the same as 68 chevy.

Did this help, or did it add to the confusion?

That red, black & silver truck you were asking about.....was the Traders built truck. It was awsome and I still have the centerfold from truckin mag with it. It was sooo cool with the shaved drip rails and all the other mods for it's time. If I get a chance, I will scan it and see how it turns out.

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

you don't have to change out the core support, with a few holes drilled for the front splash pan or filler panel, the piece that goes between the core support and bumber on the 67-68 chevy. Other wise they are functional the same.
Get a 67-68 hood, latch assembly, brace, fenders, grill and filler panel
if you want GMC then you have to get a different core support because of the dual headlights. Or modify for the GMC style headlight buckets.

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

'71-2 headlights stick out farther than '67-68. They have pieces (buckets, like the GMC) welded over the stock headlight holes. To use the '71-2 radiator support with a '67-8 front clip, you'd have to remove those.

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

ah the one thing I didn't pick up on. I have mocked up the 72 core support to use the 67-68 fenders and hood but not the head light doors
Sorry for the incomplete information

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

I don't think so. I ended up using (I think) a '69 GMC support in my first '68 project truck. It was the only rustless support I could find in the junkyard, so I nabbed it. I cut off the 4 light buckets, and it fit in with no problems. I know the factory holes for *everything* to fit a '67-8 are found in the newer trucks, behind the outer brackets. Even the square holes for the adjustment screws are there.

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

I had a rusted out 68 core support sitting and i was putting together a 72 front end and sat the 72 core support right beside it. That's when I started comparing them other than a few small items they were the same. So I stopped looking for good 67-68 core supports and have 2 67-68 trucks that I have bolted together using the later core support. I thank were wolf for pointing out the one difference I missed. I was out at the shop today though and had to recheck! lol

Newbie here, so I'm just trying to make sense of this... What all is needed to run 67-68 GMC style front clip on a 69 GMC?

Everything except the threaded holes along the lower edge for the aforementioned splash pan/filler panel. Just drill and use nuts/bolts to secure.

Re: Hood and fender compatibility 67 on a 72?

Not really a GMC guy, however, I *think* they're identical already. Maybe the hood is the newer style, I forget. If you do a board search, you should come across something. I saw a thread a long time ago, before the boards switched formats, about the differences between the years as far as GMC's go.

D'oh. Was close. The panel could be left out, though.
