Teflon tape on brake lines?
I've heard a number of conflicting theories on the use of teflon tape on brake line fittings. Just put all new lines on front and rear and just have the least little bit of drips. Can I use a little tape or not? Any thoughts?

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
all my schooling always said NEVER use ANYTHING on lines other than clean brake fluid. The threads don't hold any fluid in at all, the flair on the end of the line does that work.
If there is leakage, tighten them up a little more. if there is still leakage, then disconnect the line, and inspect the surcases for dirt or jagged edges. |

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
if the lines are leaking there either isnt a good double flare or the fitting isnt tight enough.brake lines seal off of the flare as longhornman said. brake lines are subject to extremely high pressure the threads dont seal anything. if anything teflon tape will stop you from being able to properly tighten the lines. DO NOT use teflon tape

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
Thanks guys. I just continue to tighten each fitting cautiously! Everything is new so hopefully the flares are good.
Jim, good to meet you too. I expect next years Northeast get-together to be much bigger!

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
like others said make sure there is no trash in the threads. Also make sure they are not crossthreaded or ghauld (sp).

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
hey I'm new here , and no expert
but one thing I have found with new brake lines is after you tighten them for the first time , back them off about half a turn and them tighten them back up it helps them seal especialy with stainless lines cause thy are so hard. but like the others said dont use tape!! |

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
When I was getting the fittings for my air bag kit, the guy at the shop said NEVER use tape on anything.
For brake lines, like others said, the threads are not an issue anyway. But for other things, use a good liquid thread sealant like Loctite 545. The tape doesn't do well in climate and temp changes. |

Re: Teflon tape on brake lines?
Teflon tape is for "non-seated" fittings.

How you making out? Check to see if someone gave you the wrong angle on the fittings. They should match up. Actually, I go the other way and lubricate my threads with anti-sieze, esp. on my speed bleeders. It helps the threads slide better, it doesn't hurt the hydraulic system as a pc. of tape would. I do take care to keep it off the first couple of threads. JMHO
