brake idiot light

It appears that I have a common problem. I've found some discussion in the archives but no confirmed solution.

I have a 88 Chevy 2500 with non-abs brakes. The brakes work fine. The brake idiot light is always on. It's britter when the parking brake is engaged.

Has anyone fixed this problem?

Are you sure you don't have rear ABS? I know all half tons had rear ABS standard, but I cannot recall whether 3/4s had it or not. If you have ABS, you'll have a black box hanging around between the master cylinder and the inner fender.

It could be any number of reasons why the light is on. If you have a Chilton's or Haynes manual, it should describe how to induce the light to give you an error code so you can narrow down your search for the source of the problem. If you don't have a manual, then let me know, I have both of them. Good luck!

My '89 S-15 has a proportioning valve that prevents full braking power to the rear before the front brakes are fullly loaded. Maybe your set up is similar, look under the master cylinder at the fire wall for the valve.

My dash light came on and it was "fixed" by disconecting the battery. The goodwrench guy said that clears the computer. They did it before reading the codes and the light did not come back on. I never had a problem braking.

Could it be a parking brake cable problem? I bent mine, according to the shop, and it caused all sorts of trouble because the back brakes did not disengage fully. They would get hot and grab.

I have a 90 3/4 Sub 4X4 with rear abs and having some issues with the abs and cruise control, The lot i bought the sub from gave me a print out for code 9 speed sensor! I wonder if that has to do with my speedo being wrong and the cruise not to work. What fuse on the fuse block is for abs/cruise? Because the block is not labeled for such! Oh by the way have a friend with a 89 3/4 ton sub 4X4 w/no rear abs.

nova, yeah that would disable the cruise. It requires a signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Shouldn't be too hard to replace, in the transfer case.

Thanks for the info, I need to figure out what options/equipment goes with each year of these trucks...

Thumbs up

There is a reset switch at the top of the brake arm. You have to hold the brake all the way down with one hand and lift up on the switch with the other. Very simple to fix unless there is a major issue.
