restamped engine block
Was at a swap meet yesterday and looked at truck, not seriously just curious.
It was a 67 cst fully loaded. The owner said he had the engine completely rebuilt including having the engine decked. I looked at the engine and it still had the engine I.D. # on it. I thought when an engine was decked the # was machined off. The owner seemed at little shakey, the suposed 67 had a 69-72 cab (foot emergency brake). Plus a few other little things. He did have the machine work done at a good local shop and the receipt broke down all the work. Do they restamp engine I.D. #? Didn't have my camera otherwise I would have taken a pix. They can indeed restamp VIN numbers but it is very difficult to duplicate the exact size and font with over the counter stamps. If the block had been decked even a few thousandths , the VIN number would nearly certainly have been removed. BUT... while he said the block had been decked it is possible that it was merely " surfaced " and the original stamping remained intact. People will do strange things in search of a dollar. There are lots of " numbers matching " cars and trucks out there with engines, transmissions etc... that were not truly part of the vehicles original assembly.
I am also a member of a Mustang forum and we have experienced some very heated discussions on this issue. Those who are guilty of this behavior use the example that their engine could have come down the assembly line and been placed into their car rather than the station wagon it wound up in. My argument is that many Mustangs came down the assembly line , but they weren't all Shelbys, Boss 302's etc... until the VIN number was put on it. At that point , it's a done deal and if THE original engine is not still a part of that vehicle, it is not numbers matching. Fake is fake and if someone sells something as numbers matching original when it isn't, they're a thief. JMHO, Den

It is very possible the numbers did not machine off. Ive done a bunch of decking and sometimes the numbers are stamped real deap or that is the low end and only had a few thousanths to remove. Its not uncommon.

Exactly. I've seen it go both ways: lose the numbers or they remain.

For Corvettes where the block number is key many machine shops simply stop short of the pad.
