Starter won't stop
Okay, did a search but didn't find what I was looking for or someone having a similar problem. Seems like the common problem is the starter won't go, instead of going all the time.
I replaced the starter on my 71 c10 with stock 350 and TH350. The new starter works fine, with the exception of if the engine doesn't fire and start, the starter won't shut off. I thought maybe it was the ignition switch, so replaced that, but it still happens. I went through and cleaned the battery terminals, took off and cleaned the battery cable connections at the starter and block, replaced what looked like some iffy wires down to the starter from where the purple branched off to the coil and the starter, along with the yellow wire. Any suggestions on what else to dig into? Thanks, Scott

Re: Starter won't stop
The starter is too close to the flywheel. If it starts, the engine throws the bendix back. Install a starter shim and it will be fixed. The shims are available at the parts stores. Motormite makes them. They will be in a red package and will say HELP across the top.

Re: Starter won't stop
Thanks! I actually have some shims from the 70 laying around, so I'll try those and give it a whirl.
Thanks, Scott

Re: Starter won't stop
My dad's starter went bad on his '71 after a week's vacation. He went to start it and back it out of the garage, and the starter wouldn't quit or disengage. The truck did fire, I believe, and the starter still refused to disengage. I'm not sure, though, as it was a long time ago, and if it did fire, my dad cut it off immediately. I just know it ended with the starter freezing, the battery cables turning red hot, and us almost having a blown-up battery in our faces.
Be careful!

Re: Starter won't stop
Did you make sure to connect the wires to the right terminals on the silonoid? The purple to the start and the yellow to the run?

Re: Starter won't stop
Yep, originally had them switched, and the starter wouldn't turn, and that's one reason I had to replace the yellow wire, since it started smoking.

Re: Starter won't stop
Sounds Like A Bad Solenoid On The Starter. Pretty Common. Try Another Starter. John

Re: Starter won't stop
I had a starter pinion gear over-run the ring gear, which, effectively holds the solenoid in the start position - with the key off. I won't go into the flaming aftermath story.
Shims should help. - Dave

Re: Starter won't stop
Sorry, finally freed up enough time to work on the truck again.
Put 3 shims in with no change. Going to go and reconfirm the wiring and put a volt meter on it to confirm that the voltage is shutting off when the switch is turned off. I'll also dig up some more shims and shim it out some more or until the gear doesn't engage the flywheel correctly, whichever comes first. Stay tuned and I'll let you know what happens. Scott

Re: Starter won't stop
Okay, I confirmed that it's a binding issue, but no amount of shims will fix it. I put in about 1/2" of shims and it's still doing it. I took the starter out and clamped it to a cinder block and it works fine as long as it's not mounted. I'll take it back out and compare it to the old one to see if there is any difference.
So in the meantime since I got tired of laying on the ground I redid my valve cover and intake gaskets and replaced all my vaccumn hoses. Scott
